All right all of you Dancing With the Stars fans—we’re down to the wire! Tonight marks the semi-final routines, and Chelsea Kane, Kirstie Alley, Hines Ward or Ralph Macchio will walk away with the mirrorball trophy (with their professional partner, of course). Our pre-season predictions weren’t too far off!

To get the inside scoop about what it’s really like to be on the show, we recently caught up with pro Karina Smirnoff. Besides displaying fancy footwork with The Karate Kid‘s Ralph Macchio on the show, Karina has her own dance studio, and has just released a workout DVD, shoe line and makeup line (whew!). During her few spare moments, she told us about DWTS training, how she stays well-fueled during her hectic schedule and what it’s like to dance with a movie star.

Has your workout routine changed since you began on DWTS?

Yes. We rehearse everyday for seven or eight hours and take very few short breaks. After that, I usually rush to my dance studio to teach my fitness classes. That leaves very little time to do anything else! But sometimes I can fit in a yoga class.

How do you maintain your perky attitude and energy with that grueling schedule?

I try to eat healthy and keep my energy up with bananas, dark chocolate and protein, like nuts. Nuts are my favorite snack because they’re healthy and filling.

How does Ralph Macchio compare to the other partners you’ve had on the show?

I love Ralph. We clicked right away and I think we make a great team. We’re both workaholics! We laugh a lot, work a lot, but most importantly, we love dancing together. I am truly enjoying being Ralph’s partner.

Who do you see as your biggest competition this season?

This season is very unpredictable. We have a lot of great celebrities and everyone is bringing their “A” game. All we can do is work hard, deliver the best job we can on Mondays, keep entertaining our fans and hope for the best.

DWTS surely keeps you busy. Will you be hands-on at your new studio, Karina Smirnoff Dance?

Absolutely. I’ll be teaching students and training instructors. Everyone who wants to learn how to dance, get in shape, meet new friends and have lots of fun should stop in!

Want to see Karina and Ralph advance to the finals? Visit abc.com or call 1-800-868-3408 to vote. AT&T customers can text until 30 minutes after the show.

Now tell us: Who are you rooting for to take the DWTS trophy this season?

Rooting for you and Ralph. He brings an impressive work ethic and down-to-earth persona to dance. This has been a likeable season of “stars” which is fun for the viewer. The snarky judging hurts the show though. I am sorry you both have been subjected to it.

i have always been there for you both of you since the 1st day :) you will be fine tonight i promise you <3

  • Linda Nye

I have been behind you and Ralph from day 1 Can’t say I like the judges this year and Bruno needs to be censored You 2 never got the points you deserved it’s for the fans favs not the judges they should critique only not try to choose the winner!!!

Absolutely love Karina! I have been using all of my votes for Karina and Ralph~ I feel like the cha-cha was a setup! I may have to boycott DWTS

  • Mark

I started out as a Kirstie Alley fan. But I was also starting out on twitter and Karina followed me much to my pleasant surprise. Since Karina followed me on twitter I have been loyally voting for her and Ralph with 3 phones and 4 e mail addresses.
I think it is a thrill to have one of the actual on stage performers following you on twitter.

    I love Karina and Ralph.

I have voted for you and Ralph from the very beginning. I totally respect both of you for the work ethic, mutual respect and consideration, dedication, and sense of fun. You both have avoided the personal drama and ridiculous behind scenes antics. You both pushed through the injury and have provided the world with amazing and creative routines. You are both winners as far as integrity, ethics, and professionalism. Ralph is my hero for the way he pulled thru when you fell, and showed his genuine concern for your safety and well being, over and above the scores. That is the mark of a real man. It is a rare thing indeed to find anyone with such a grounded sense of reality, I am very proud of you guys and wish you only the best and look forward to seeing more of you both in future ventures. On a personal note, ever since Karate Kid, Ralph looks amazingly like my little brother, so I feel as though I am rooting for family. Please share my best wishes with Ralph for me, thanks!

Karina, I am so devastated that Ralph and you were both voted off tonight. I am now on my second box of kleenex. You both were robbed. Now nothing will make me feel any better :(

I looked forward to those monday and tuesday nights because you and Ralph did extremely well as a team.

  • Michele

Loved your performances every week – will miss you. Still feel you were robbed!

Ralph & Karina have left us with so many great memories this season. Karina’ dancing has always been spectacular but I think her choreography was especially brilliant in Season 12. It all can lead only to great things!
