Four Fall Trends To Try Right Now!

Written on November 12, 2012 at 5:14 pm , by

Sequin eyebrows, purple lips, crimped hair—some runway trends look like they belong in a circus. We made simple tweaks to a few of our favorite looks so that you can wear them in real life.

Oxblood Nails: This vampy red hue is popping up everywhere in the fashion world. Think it’s too bold for your wardrobe? Test-drive it on your nails first (the dark shade looks best on short, squoval-shaped tips). Our top picks: CND Nail Colour in Dark Ruby ($9, cnd.com) and Zoya Nail Polish in Oxblood Red ($8, zoya.com).

Messy Topknot: Tired of your ponytail whipping your neck while you log miles on the treadmill? Meet the topknot. It’s just as easy to do but looks cooler. Secure a high ponytail then wrap the tail around the base, creating a knot—it doesn’t have to be perfect; the more casual, the better. Leave the bejeweled headband at home.

Shimmery Green Eyes: Update your typical smoky eyes with green shadow. Tip: Snag trendy colors (like green!) at the drugstore. Sweep a wash over your lids or rim your upper lash lines for a toned down version of the winged green shadow below.

Sheer Red Lips: Rushing from a workout to the office? Save time by swiping on a tinted red lip balm and keeping the rest of your face natural. You’ll look pulled together but by swapping a balm for the lipstick version, you won’t need a lip brush or a ton of mirror time.

Our “Ready, Set, Glow!” makeup feature in the April issue (check it out on pages 40 – 44!)  shows you seven ways to update your standard makeup look for spring— in a single step. Here’s a peek on the set of the photo shoot for the story, where celebrity makeup artist Jackie Gomez— whose clients include Beyoncé, Zoe Saldana and Marisa Miller— worked her magic:

The Runway Rundown

With runway season coming to a close, it’s time to look back and reflect on our favorite beauty looks.  We’re using these fresh looks as inspiration to update our routine:

All About Eyes. Cynthia Rowley’s runway gals sported this strong smoky eye look that we loved. The models’ cat eyes were extended with bold brown shadow instead of liner, a great technique to subtly amp up your evening makeup.  Gold liner below the bottom lashes adds a pop of color that draws attention to the eyes and balances out the strong shadow.

True Romance. This cheeky look was spotted at the Elie Tahari show. The models donned a super-flushed pink cheek, but what we loved even more were the subtle heart-shaped lips. The flirtatious pucker perfectly finished off the uber-romantic look.

Ice Queens. At Luca Luca the models’ icy beauty offered fresh take on the bold lip. These ladies proved that you don’t need to be tan to work the rouge. Even the hairstyle was refreshing, with a unique parted, pinned-up bun.  The illuminated eye was alluring and whimsical, and the model’s skin radiated, creating an over all flawless face.

Swept Away. Rodarte’s models look like they just blew in on a breeze. The windblown hair paired with funky yellow and orange eye makeup is a refreshing change from the standard smoky eye. And the model’s pout is the perfect rusty hue that meshes well with the unusual eye.
