When I think of November, a few activities come to mind: football (watching, not playing), Thanksgiving, holiday shopping, oh, and eating pomegranates. Winter is right around the corner and I can already feel my skin cringing at thought of the harsh elements. So when I saw the Fresh Crème Ancienne Ultimate Nourishing Honey Mask ($130, Fresh.com) I couldn’t help wanting to slather in on my face ASAP. This luxe pot of sweet goodness, which contains two and a half tablespoons of pure honey, melts into skin to deliver up to six hours (according to the company) of nourishment. It’s also packed with Echinacea extract, which helps improve skin’s resilience to environmental aggressors like pollution and smog (a big plus for big city dwellers!). While I’m leery of thick masks due to my oily, acne-prone skin, this one didn’t clog my pores or trigger a breakout, since honey is actually a natural antibiotic and works to pull out dirt and grime while also healing existing acne marks. You probably know Stacy London as the vivacious stylist on TLC’s hit show, What Not to Wear (the series finale aired this past Friday). But what you may not know is what drew London to the fashion industry in the first place. Turns out, she’s been battling a chronic autoimmune and skin disease—psoriasis—for the majority of her life and found comfort in sparkly, shiny pieces. Here, she opens up about her struggles with psoriasis and the ways in which she’s helping others also affected by it with the “Uncover Your Confidence” campaign, which features educational resources, style advice and a dermatologist finder for the estimated 7.5 million American men and women living with psoriasis. Bonus: she spills on her best beauty tips and recent hair change, too.
Tell us about your experience with psoriasis and how it’s affected your life?
“I was diagnosed when I was four, so it’s been in my life my whole life. As much as people know me for something completely different, it is very much a part of my identity. You know, the heartbreak of psoriasis is a well-known thing. Being diagnosed at the age of four, I really didn’t understand what was happening. I just knew there was something wrong with me because I had these bumps on the back of my ears. So it started as something that made me feel weird and certainly made me feel different than other kids. That is definitely something I started to internalize very early. As I got older, my skin got worse and by the time I was 11, I was basically covered from the neck down in red scales and it was a much harder time because at that age, I was conscious of what I looked like. I had very severe scalp psoriasis so I had to cut off all my hair. So here I was, a little girl with a crew cut wearing turtlenecks and long corduroy pants even in the summer just to hide. That’s when that feeling of really being different and having children and adults react badly to me, that I really started to suffer from it. You know psoriasis is an autoimmune disease. It takes consistent and constant management but also, it’s emotionally devastating. I think that definitely drew me to fashion. Because, feeling sort of like a monster, I wanted all things pretty and sparkly and shiny and perfect and what better place than fashion to find that? I can say now, I don’t think I thought that consciously at the time. It’s sort of a compensatory desire that I didn’t feel good about myself and my self esteem was very low that I gravitated to something that I thought would certainly make me feel better. But when I wrote about psoriasis in my book, the biggest thing for me and that I really empathize with is that you kind of give up when you have psoriasis and the idea that you are ruled by a disease rather than you having control over it. The idea specifically was to manifest this concept of empowerment by creating a style guide that is specific to people who may not care about showing off their psoriasis or may be looking to cover up their skin but to feel relevant and not necessarily trendy but modern and feel like they’re participating in the same fashion trends that other people are. So it’s a great topical guide to what’s going on with an eye on making sure you’re paying attention to materials that could irritate your skin or the length of a skirt that may be more appropriate if you want to cover your leg a little bit more; things through the lense of someone who has experienced psoriasis themselves and wanted style, not just to hide in but to feel beautiful in. Because I think I spent my childhood hiding in turtlenecks and long corduroys and really I wish I had known to use style to feel better not just as armor.”
Tell us more about the “Uncover Your Confidence” campaign?
“It consists of the style guide, one, but it also consists of the dermatologist finder which is about taking control. You know I have been in the care of many dermatologists for over 40 years and it took me a long time to realize that not all dermatologists specialize in psoriasis. Psoriasis is a skin disease and an autoimmune disease. So it’s a much more complex situation. Part of getting the right kind of treatment is to see the right kind of doctor and dermatologist specifically. So one of the things we wanted to do was to help people find the right kind of dermatologist. Part of that idea is that we are asking you instead of learning helplessness, to learn hope and to embrace the idea that just because you may think somebody couldn’t help you the first time you went to visit a dermatologist, that doesn’t mean you saw the right one. The same thing with thinking about your style, like you can’t wear black because God forbid you have scalp psoriasis and it’s going to look like a snow storm hit your shoulders. The campaign offers ways in which to deal with these kinds of things instead of feeling like you have to give up; accepting the situation and then building creatively both your style and, in the process, creating more self-confidence.
Switching gears to beauty. How has the disease affected your beauty routine?
“It’s funny, you know I talk about covering up, and beauty plays such a significant part. It’s kind of ironic because you feel anything but beautiful with psoriasis. For me, one of the things I learned very early on is that I needed to get some sun. As long as I got a little bit of sun, it really improved my skin and my mood. I found that moisturizing creams were not as good as oils. Oils absorb into the skin better, especially when you’ve got really, really dried plaques that can crack and bleed. The other thing is just moisture, period. In the winter, especially when you have dry heat, humidifiers have been essential to me. It’s super important. Since it’s an autoimmune disease, there are other things that you can do just besides the moisture. You need to make sure you’re getting enough sleep, that you’re eating properly; you need to exercise; you need to think holistically about your whole body.”
Do you have beauty products that help you feel confident when you’re having a bad day?
“Two favorites: Antonia Burrell Natural Glow Cleansing Oil ($102, beautyhabit.com) and Radiant Light Serum ($98, beautyhabit.com). If I look super ruddy or flaky, it has worked miracles for me in terms of evening my skintone. The other thing I think is really important with psoriasis is it gets very red. So I recommend using a green tinted concealer to cut the red and then put your foundation over it. I find if I wear anything too orange-y, like an orange-y red lip, that makes my skin look even redder so I tend to go for blue-red tones if I’m going for a red lip. I will say at the moment I’ve been jonesing for By Terry lipsticks (prices vary, beautybar.com). The colors are so saturated and glorious. And I do love Giorgio Armani Blushing Fabric Liquid Blush ($39, giorgioarmanibeauty.com) in the peach shade, #3. It makes you look like your glowing from the outside in.”
You’ve recently made a major hair change, debuting lighter ends. Can we discuss?
“I cannot believe that this has taken hold like it has! I mean, do people know that Syria is happening? I’ve gotten really lovely notes like ‘Bravo!’ and then all these people are like, ‘What’s wrong with you? You’re going through a mid-life crisis.’ I’m telling you right here, right now, you have the exclusive: one, that picture is an Instagram picture. If you’ve heard, there are filters so it looks a little crazier in that picture than it actually is. Number two, I am having a mid-life renaissance and that is why I’m like, ‘It’s time for a change, why not?’”

Once a month, I see my derm for a glycolic peel to keep my skin looking glowy and to help keep acne at bay. Ruth Zukerman, a leading fitness instructor for over 25 years, values health and wellness in her personal life but loves to share it with others even more. In 2006, she co-founded the popular indoor cycling studio Flywheel, which now has 24 locations nationwide and is rapidly growing. Her latest adventure: teaming up with the classic skincare brand Olay to spread the word about beauty and wellness to the fitness world. We stole a few minutes with her to chat about two of our favorite things: Spinning and beauty.
What interested you in teaming up with Olay?
“Basically, I was introduced to several of their products, particularly the Olay Ultra Moisture Body Wash ($6, olay.com). It’s an amazing product for anyone in fitness because it’s so moisturizing and there’s a longterm effect. There are a lot of days where I shower two to three times and I always worry, especially as I get older, about dry skin and the toll it takes on your skin when you take a lot of showers. I use it now exclusively and it’s just kept my skin looking great. It makes my skin glow and it smells amazing.”
How do you incorporate wellness into your life through beauty?
“Well, I would say first and foremost, I’m pretty simple when it comes to that and it’s about looking healthy, feeling clean and not wearing a lot of makeup in class. I wear waterproof mascara and some lip-gloss and once in a while, maybe in the winter, an oil-free foundation. That much is fine when you sweat because you do sweat so much in class. And I just really like to keep the look natural.”
Do you have any tips for getting out of the locker room fast post-workout?
“If you can shower quickly, I would recommend using the Ultra Moisture Body Wash because it’s a two-in-one thing since you don’t have to take the time to apply moisturizer afterwards. Aside from that, maybe spray in some dry shampoo to give hair a fresh look. During the workout, most of our riders wear either a bandana or we have sparkly headbands that we sell at our studios that look great and keep the hair away from your face. What I always recommend in terms of low maintenance is putting your hair back so it’s out of your face and then after class, taking your hair down and you can sort of blow dry around the hair line and it really preserves your hair.”
What beauty trends are you seeing all the active women rock in your studios?
“The ponytail is probably the most popular style and as I said, it looks great with those glittery headbands or sparkly bands. Braids are pretty big right now and I notice that a lot of our Boca and Miami instructors wear their hair in braids with a bandana and it looks amazing. It’s a great way to keep the hair away from your neck when you’re sweating so much.”
Do you have any post-workout must-haves?
“I would have to say the Olay 4-in-1 Daily Facial Cloths ($7, olay.com) because they’re so quick and easy, especially if I don’t have time to shower, I just head to the bathroom and give my face a quick wipe down and I feel good.”

I’ve never had perfect skin but I’ve always tried to fake it. Armed with an arsenal of foundation, concealer and powder, I could apply my “no-makeup” makeup routine in my sleep. But one thing I’ve never added to the mix was a face primer. Though I’m addicted to eye shadow primer as mentioned here, most versions I’ve tried for the face have felt too greasy until I snagged Clinique Superprimer Universal Face Primer ($27, clinique.com) from the beauty closet. I tossed it in my makeup bag and smoothed it over my face after my moisturizer but before foundation. I was stunned by how hydrating and lightweight it felt. It evens out my skin texture without that heavy silicone feeling I’ve experienced in the past. My makeup goes on better and lasts longer with this as a base. I use the Universal shade, which is colorless, but it comes in five additional shades that help counteract specific issues like redness, sallowness and dullness. I may never feel like I have flawless skin (does anyone, really?) but I’m happy to keep fooling everyone with this complexion perfector.

We all want our bodies to look lean and strong, so we hit the gym hard, but those sweat-inducing workouts can sometimes wreak havoc on our skin. Renee Rouleau, Esthetician and Skin Care Expert, gets it—as a CrossFit addict, she knows all about wanting to tone up without having to deal with embarrassing breakouts or runny sunscreen. So we asked her to answer some of your top workout-related skin-care Q’s.
In terms of skin health, how important is it to drink water before and after a workout?
“Since you lose so much water from perspiration, it’s crucial to replace it by drinking plenty of fluids before, during and after workouts. The electrolyte-replacing drinks are especially helpful for re-hydrating the body. From a skin-care standpoint, research concludes that drinking water is the least efficient way to hydrate the skin. Skin hydration levels have much more to do with what you are using topically on the skin. A product like the Renée Rouleau Skin Drink ($38, reneerouleau.com) helps hydrate the skin very well. Apply it post-workout to restore hydration.”
I like to wear a headband or a bandana to prevent sweat from dripping down my face, but will that cause breakouts?
“I wouldn’t recommend headbands, bandanas or even hats across the forehead as they can cause a build up of oil and perspiration in the pores which will result in little clogged bumps or acne. If your skin is not prone to breakouts, this may not be an issue for you. If you find that you’re getting clogged pores, try to keep your accessory further back on your hairline but not directly across the forehead.”
How bad is it to wear makeup to the gym?
“Eye makeup and lipstick are fine to wear. Should you really feel the need to wear foundation, try mineral-based powders as they are sweat-resistant, breathable and won’t clog pores. Either way, you want to clean the skin and remove oils and sweat post-workout.”
I like to remove all my makeup before a workout, but then my skin feels a little dry. Is applying a moisturizer before sweating OK?
“When you exercise, your skin loses water due to evaporation, leaving the skin dehydrated. Dehydrated skin increases surface lines and causes skin cells to die prematurely, leading to aging as well as dead skin cell build up and clogged pores. Using a lightweight moisturizer will help to retain the water in the skin. If you are exercising outdoors, it’s best to use a very light moisturizer with a sunscreen.”
I sometimes can’t shower immediately after the gym. Could that cause body acne?
“Showering immediately after a workout can definitely help keep your back clear. The people that are most likely to get back breakouts are the ones that produce excessive oil. Generally, those who have oily skin on their face will also have excessive oil production on the back as well. Since oil is a breeding ground for bacteria, one of the ways to reduce back breakouts is to shower often. Keeping the skin clean can make a huge difference. Exfoliate your back with a mild cleansing gel and exfoliating cloth three times a week and apply an anti-bacterial lotion to help keep your back clear.”
I always apply sunscreen but I sweat a lot. Do I just sweat my sunscreen right off? If so, how can I stay protected besides wearing a hat?
“Apply your sunscreen prior to working out so it has time to absorb fully. No sunscreen can withhold intense sweating so it’s important to reapply often. You can also apply a mineral powder with SPF over your sunscreen for added protection. Most mineral powders tend to be water-resistant so they will hold up better to sweating and therefore keep you protected better. Since one of the major contributing factors to the aging process is the production of free radicals caused from exercise, it’s very important to take antioxidants to minimize the damage. One simple way to help suppress the free radical activity is to take Vitamin C (500 mg) thirty minutes prior to exercise. It takes about thirty minutes to dissolve in your system and activate, so while you are exercising you’re sure to have full Vitamin C protection for the cells in your body.”

Courtney Conlogue and her surfboard carry quite the record. As a leading competitor with multiple wins and titles, she is one of the best women surfers to emerge out of Orange County, California. With summer in full swing and (hopefully) a trip to the beach penciled in on your calendar, we tapped her for the best ways to workout fast, and how to keep your strands looking fresh after some serious sun damage. Plus, if you’ve always dreamed of jumping onto a surfboard and hanging ten, Conlogue shared her tips on how to get started.
How do you train to stay fit during surf season?
“I’ve gone through a couple of phases. During my track and field days, I was really bulking up and that wasn’t really working out for me. So right now, I’m currently using either low weight or just my weight in my workouts. And incorporating endurance, power, speed, agility, all of those things and balance especially. Working out on the Bosu ball has been my favorite right now.”
And that helps with balance in the water, right?
“Yeah, I do a lot of rowing stuff, reverse push-ups, inverted push-ups, hamstring curls, single-leg snaps on the Bosu and single-leg toe touches. Actually, right now, I’m trying to make a video with all my surf workouts. I’m not sure when it’s going to come out, but I’m pretty excited to do a little workout and have it where other people can try it out.”
How do you manage to fit in your workouts when you have a tight schedule?
“I just kind of make it happen whenever I see a little bit of a gap—whether it’s twenty minutes or an hour. You can do a solid workout that lasts twenty minutes; all you do is have less of a break. The maximum break I really do in a workout in between sets of sets is probably 20-30 seconds. And when doing that, your body learns to recover a lot quicker and you build a lot of endurance. I’ve always found that to be really good, especially with surfing.”
Being in the sun and salt water all the time can be pretty rough on your skin and hair. What are your best beauty tips for keeping your skin and hair healthy?
“I always have leave-in conditioner in my hair no matter what. That’s one of the things I do. I just leave the conditioner in because my hair is always getting moisture and nutrients sucked out of it, especially with the sun and the salt. So I use that as a protectant, and then I have a UV spray and it’s like a hairspray that you spray on your hair before you go into the water. And then for my face, I always like to put night cream on and I’m always wearing sunscreen—the higher the SPF, the better. I like foundation sunscreen because it gives you a little tint and it stays on better. What else? I’ve been doing this little thing when I go into the sauna, I put a hair mask in my hair, and put a towel on my head and just let it kind of bake and it re-moisturizes and gives it back its nutrients.”
Do you use any waterproof products?
“When I’m doing photo shoots and stuff like that I do wear waterproof mascaras. But I go natural when I’m in the water. I don’t bother looking good when surfing most of the time, I think natural is best. I’ve always found being natural at the beach is what the beach is about.”
What’s your advice for someone who wants to get into surfing but is intimidated by it?
“I think the key is just knowing how to swim—know the basics. And then I think having a surf instructor, having an individual lesson with a group of friends or just yourself with someone is always really helpful because it gives you that confidence and comfort knowing they always have your back. I do a couple lessons here and there with people in programs and stuff and I always have my eye on everyone, making sure they have the best time of their life when they’re out so they want to go out again. We love getting more people in our community as a part of the surfing family. So I think just getting out there and having fun because no matter what, you’re going to have a blast once you get on the board. And then you get into a couple waves and you stand up, that thrill you get when you’re dropping down the wave is just awesome.”

Cellulite is no laughing matter—especially for those who have it, which is up to 90 percent of women, according to recent reports. And when it comes to the dimply, jiggly skin, it seems women will try just about anything to get rid of it (think: shrink wrap and crazy shapewear). But some of these makeshift solutions are so extreme, the only thing you can do is laugh at the lengths women go to in hopes of smoothing out the cellulite (hey, we all can relate). Beauty company Vichy is making light of the matter by introducing the Cellulite Confessions campaign with a funny mockumentary that highlights the nonsensical and just plain wacky treatments women attempt in their pursuit for smoother skin.
On a more serious note, Vichy wants to help you kick cellulite’s stubborn butt. And since most attempts seem to fail, the brand is taking a new, two-pronged approach. Vichy is kicking off the Cellulite Confessions campaign, so what are some of the craziest things you’ve heard from women trying to get rid of cellulite?
“It’s interesting because they come here [Equinox] to get rid of it so I think they would have way too much shame to tell me and confess to me what they’ve done otherwise. But they complain a lot about the areas where they have cellulite and I just tell them to make sure they’re consistent with their workouts, that they drink plenty of water, that they have a good diet as well, that they steer away from processed foods and eat more kinds of whole foods that will help them have body weight that is consistent with their height.”
So what are some of the best exercises that women can do to target those trouble zones?
“I think a combination of cardio and strength-training, especially strength-training. Women tend to steer towards cardio and they don’t do too much strength-training. One pound of muscle in your body actually burns 50 more calories during rest time. So to do strength-training as well as cardio, and not try to zone in too much on the target areas but a total body workout does the trick.”
How does your diet play a key role in helping the appearance of cellulite?
“I mean, even if you work out and you don’t eat well, it’s going to still be a problem. It’s part of the equation: you eat well and you exercise and you will see results. It just goes hand in hand. And you know, staying away from the sugar and saturated fats and anything that pretty much comes out of a box or a can and eating whole foods that are colorful and fruit and vegetables and protein, because protein builds muscle as well.”
What do you think the biggest misconceptions are about cellulite?
“That only fat people have it. Actually, according to the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, 85% of women post-puberty have cellulite. And cellulite is caused by genetics, or post-natal, or poor food habits, or lack of working out, smoking causes it as well. And all shapes and sizes actually have cellulite. It doesn’t matter; celebrities have it, short, tall, skinny. It’s just something women have to deal with throughout their life.”
What would be your best advice for women to feel confident in their own skin?
“You know, a combination of eating well and exercising. And exercising, you release these endorphins that give you a sense of well-being. It actually takes about five minutes for the anti-stress benefits of exercise to kick in. Five minutes! That’s pretty good. And when you exercise and you feel good about yourself, I think you put your best foot forward in anything that you do. As a mother, as a professional, as a daughter, I think you have the ability to deal with whatever the world is throwing at you because you’re taking care of your body and yourself first, then you’re able to take care of everything else and everyone else in your world.”
