Being a beauty editor forces us to be fickle— new launches to test arrive at our desks every day— so very few products become mainstays in our arsenal. One that’s remained unmatched over the years is Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Cream. The lightweight olive oil-based formula has the miraculous ability to instantly turn our strands from straw to silk. We use it as a leave-in conditioner or work a dime-sized amount over dry strands to smooth and add shine, making split ends disappear and even the most abused hair (like ours) look healthy again.

We’d recently gone a tad too long between trims— OK, more like a month too long!— and had shamefully scraggly ends to show for it. Our strand-saving grace: Redken All Soft Argan-6 Multi-Care Oil, a subtly sweet-scented formula that’s more viscous than regular oils, so it’s not runny and messy. We apply a dollop on damp hair after a shower: The argan-packed elixir makes our brittle, frayed ends feel soft and look healthy. It can be used on dry hair as well to tame, smooth and add shine in between washings, or as a rinse-out nourishing treatment.

When I was organizing the beauty closet recently, I discovered that bigger is better when it comes to lip gloss. FLIRT! Big Flirt Sheer and Shiny Lipgloss in Big Time Nude has found a home in my already overstuffed handbag. The soft, moisturizing formula is packaged in a chubby tube that holds more lip gloss than your average wand. I love the supersized applicator because it provides a shiny, lasting finish in just one stroke. I wear it alone to create a subtle polished look, or layer it over my lipstick for a bold and lush pout.

The Glisten Up feature in our November/December issue shows you easy ways to put a little glitz in your makeup look this season— but there’s a new category of products made to put some sparkle on your hair. Pomades and mists like Oribe 24-Karat Gold Pomade, Regis Gold Dust Finisher Pomade, Alterna Glitterati Sparkling Champagne Spray and Spun Gold Pomade, and Motions Shine Enhancing Pomade are laced with super-fine, gold-based shimmer that catches the light, making your strands look extra-luminous and amping up your color. If you have long hair, choose a mist; pomades are best for short-haired ladies. To use, spritz or smooth lightly over dry hair, starting at the roots and moving toward the ends.

You might not be able to have a bite of the royal wedding cake, but you can slick on storied British brand Crabtree & Evelyn’s delectable Vanilla Créme Brûlée Lip Butter. The extra creamy shea-butter based formula tastes and smells true-to-life, like a decadent dessert—minus the calories!—and leaves behind just a hint of sheen. A treat truly fit for a princess!

Styling, weather conditions and color can all destroy hair’s health, stripping it of its natural shine and bounce. This past weekend I decided to take control of my lackluster locks, and restore life into them by trying some reparative treatments. I have thick, long hair, so I started with Pantene Pro-V Restore Beautiful Lengths Replenishing Mask. As directed, I combed the mask into my damp hair after shampooing, and left it on for five minutes before rinsing. I styled as usual and could not believe the improvement in the condition of my hair! My dry ends were finally smooth and shine was immediately restored.
I have naturally curly hair, but years of blow drying and flat ironing have transformed my curls into dull waves. Ouidad products are designed to feed and strengthen curls with essential nutrients, and the 12 Minute Deep-Treatment proved to do just that. I applied a palm-full of the product into my clean, damp hair and covered with a shower cap. I then applied heat to it with a blow dryer and left on for 12 minutes before rinsing. Once combed, my curls were restored. My hair was bouncy and voluminous, and my sad waves are now frizz-free spirals!
When looking for a fast way to improve your appearance, sometimes it’s best to just start from the top. What products have you used to improve your hair’s health? Would you try these treatments?
