Olympic Silver Medal-Winning Swimmer Maritza Correia “Makes a Splash” and Dishes Her Look-Fab Secrets

Written on May 21, 2012 at 11:09 am , by

As the first African American woman to earn a place on the U.S Olympic Swim Team, Maritza Correia knows a lot about staying fit, accomplishing your goals, and of course, how to stay gorgeous in harsh, wet elements. Here are her secrets— and why she’s signed on with the USA Swimming Foundation’s “Make a Splash” initiative.

FITNESS: How did you get involved with the “Make a Splash” program?
Maritza Correia: I actually just signed on with “Make a Splash” in March. As a competitor and the first African American woman on the U.S Olympics Swim Team, I want to get kids, especially minorities, involved in swimming and teach them the importance of water safety.

FITNESS: You’re constantly in the water. How do you keep your hair from drying out and protected?
MC: I really take care of it. I only wash it two to three times a week because shampoo can really dry out your hair. I condition it often, using the Pantene Pro-V line.

FITNESS: What’s your haircare, makeup and skincare routine like on a typical day?
MC: After practice, as I mentioned, I condition my hair. I use a lot of lotion for my body: I love Jergens Shea Butter. I don’t use the same lotion on my face because it’s more sensitive, so I stick with Aveeno for that. I have to admit, I’m a total girly-girl and I love makeup. I always wear MAC products. After practice my hair tends to be a bit frizzy, so I apply my favorite gel, L.A. Looks.

FITNESS: What does your training consist of?
MC: I am currently not training full time, but I do like to engage in a lot of clinics. I’m actually hosting one at the YMCA in Mount Vernon, New York on May 26th from 10AM to 4PM, “Make a Splash: Mount Vernon”, to kick off Memorial Day weekend. I’ll be speaking to elementary school kids on the benefits of swimming to stay fit, water safety education and about the learn-to-swim programs.

FITNESS: What’s your biggest beauty indulgence?
MC: Being such a girly-girl I have a routine of getting a manicure and pedicure every two weeks. I’ll leave the kid with my husband and take that time for myself. It’s actually really relaxing and I love that I can be creative and change the color of my nails every two weeks.

FITNESS: What are the beauty products you can’t live without?
MC: I’m addicted to lip gloss and Lip Smackers. You can probably find purple, pink and beige tubes all over the house!

FITNESS: What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?
MC: Making the Olympic team in 2004. The first time I had ever seen the games was in 1996, when they were in Atlanta. Then I became an Olympian in 2004.

FITNESS: How can readers get involved with “Make a Splash” and its lifesaving programs?
MC: They can log onto  Swimtoday.org to get information on free or discounted swim lessons. Also, If you’re more competitive, you can find a team to join, or you can just a find a pool near you to have fun, stay healthy and be fit.

Get Festive!

Written on November 29, 2011 at 1:07 pm , by

It’s time to start decking the halls— and decking yourself for all the holiday parties in the coming month. Here, genius hair and makeup tips from Lindsay Watts, cosmetology expert and teacher at Empire Beauty Schools that’ll leave you dazzling, stat.

What’s the easiest hairstyle to whip together for a holiday party?
Keep six to eight bobby pins on hand in your desk— you can do almost anything with this little handful of lifesavers. Twist a quick messy bun at the back of your head, secure with the pins, and you have a perfect updo that looks effortless but flattering. To make it a little more interesting, do the same technique, but pull the hair to the side of your head, sweeping strands to one side in the front: stunning!

What’s the hot party nail look this season?
There are so many great nail trends right now. I always love red nails for holiday and crimson is a great color for long-lasting gel manicures, which are super high-shine. Some nail technicians are actually rubbing grit buffers over these shades for a more matte look. These manicures will take you right through the whole holiday season, and with all the extra things on your to-do list, there’s no better time to have a manicure that you can forget about for two weeks.

What’s the best way to avoid looking like a Christmas ornament when wearing festive shimmery makeup?
Limit shimmer to the spots that light would naturally hit: Just the top of cheekbones, underneath the eyebrows, on the browbone and along the collarbone. I like creams more than powders; they’re more workable and you can use a bit of moisturizer to even them out if you overdo it.

Are there any no-fuss universal shades that anyone can wear?
Pewter is a big shade right now. It’s a smokier hue almost anyone can wear and is perfect for a more made-up evening look. As far as smoky shades go, pewter is one of the more foolproof options out there: Just be sure to blend well!

What salon services do you recommend as prep for party season?
Nothing makes a bigger difference in your overall look than fresh hair color. It’s no coincidence that hair color is one of the biggest beauty mood boosters around! But also think about going into the salon and getting a deep conditioning treatment. Do this before the holidays and your hair will be more manageable all season long.

Staffer Beauty Snoop: Art Intern Abby Silverman

Written on July 27, 2011 at 7:24 am , by

For the first installment in our new Staffer Beauty Snoop series, we asked art department intern Abby Silverman to spill the beauty products, tips, and tricks that she can’t live without. Here’s what she said:

Describe your beauty style in three words or less: “Trendy, bold, glamorous.”
What are the three beauty products you can’t live without? MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15, Marc Jacobs Lola Perfume and Maybelline New York Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara.”
What’s your beauty routine in the morning? “When I get of the shower I always brush my teeth and apply moisturizer to my face and body. Then I do my hair, and last, I apply my makeup.”
At night? “I use Neutrogena Deep Clean Makeup Remover Wipes for my face as well as Neutrogena Eye Makeup Remover with cotton balls to remove eye makeup. I follow with a face wash and finish off with Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizer.”
Post-workout? “I typically wash my face before I work out because I like to feel refreshed and ready to go. If I don’t wash my face pre-exercise, I always wash it after because I don’t like leaving sweat and makeup on my skin.”
What beauty product or treatment instantly makes you feel good? “I absolutely love getting my nails done. When I look down at my hands and see perfectly polished nails it makes me feel girly, clean and put together! When I don’t get my nails done, I have a secret obsession with painting my nails. I probably paint them every other day.”
What’s the best beauty tip you’ve ever received (or thought of yourself)? “If you’re trying to grow your hair out, it’s better to get it regular trims every two to three months rather than waiting to get it cut every six months. If you don’t cut your hair, it will cut itself!”

Go for the Glow

Written on June 7, 2011 at 9:18 am , by

Ladies, we all know how important it is to stay safe in the sun, but who doesn’t want a nice glow? Well, it’s time to kiss the damaging sun oils goodbye and say hello to the myriad self-tanner options on the market. Since choosing among the bounty can be daunting, I put together a list of my favorite options:

BEST INSTANT TANNER: L’Oreal Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Lotion in Deep Natural No need to worry about looking orange with this one; a perfectly bronze shade developed within a few hours.

BEST GRADUAL TANNERJergens Natural Glow Foaming Moisturizer This lightweight foam subtly enhanced my skin tone in less than a week—and spread on so easily.

BEST RINSE-OFF: MAC Cosmetics Skin-Sheen Leg Spray When my legs need an extra boost for a little black dress, I spray this transfer-resistant tint on, and it washes off in my next shower.

Kiss of Approval

Written on February 23, 2011 at 7:53 am , by

In preparation for Valentine’s Day last week, I scoured the beauty closet for the best products for my kisser. I’ve glossed, blotted, stained and have finally found the few that gave me the perfect pout.

Stain it:

I admit it: I was afraid of  lip stain, but now I want to shout my devotion from the rooftops! My favorite was the Maybelline ColorSensational Lipstain in Wink of Pink. It gives the perfect hint of color that actually lasts the several hours that other lipsticks and glosses boast.  Since this product is a stain (so yes, it stains your lips), you need to make sure you pick the right color for your skin tone. Start off with neutrals to be safe, and if you choose something too bright, try layering gloss or tinted balm on top to mute or change the color.

Smear it:

While I went with a stain for a bold punch of color, I loved MAC Cosmetics Pro Longwear Lipcreme in Bare Again for its understated and easy-to-wear tone. It goes on like a lipstick, looks like a gloss and hydrates like lip balm: The lip product jackpot!

Hydrate it:

Silky Korres Lip Butter is my pick to hydrate winter-worn pouts while providing a brightening kick of color. And the flavors are so yummy that you’ll never got back to ordinary balm again. My favorite: jasmine. Pucker up!

Prettifying Picks to Fall in Love With

Many women would be offended if their beau gave them makeup for Valentine’s Day. I can just hear the mental dialogue: “Does he think I’m ugly?”, “Is he not attracted to me?”, “Have I let myself go?” However, I would personally love a little V-Day pick me up for my makeup bag.  After all, isn’t Valentine’s the one day of the year a girl gets to be pampered and treated like a goddess? Here are the beauty buys that are making my heart go pitter-patter this Valentine’s season:

MAC Cosmetics consistently manages to put out stunning holiday collections—and their Tough Love line for Valentine’s Day is no exception.  We’ve got it bad for the Lipstick in Girl About Town, above.

In the spirit of indulgence, we’re eager to get our hands on this adorable NARS Forever Yours Limited Edition Eye, Lip & Illuminator Set.  The sweet little trio includes a new liquid highlighter, pink lip gloss and eye shadow pencil.

What’s Valentine’s Day with out a little seduction? Every girl needs a special scent to get the night going. On my wish list is rose-tinged Chloe Eau de Parfum Spray.

Nobody wants to be dry and scaly on V-Day. Kiss Me with Kiehl’s is my pick to ensure silky skin for the big night! The set includes the super-delicious, sweet-scented Soy Milk & Honey Body Polish.

In lieu of the candy hearts and chocolate covered what-have-you, I’m asking for a different kind of sugar this year. Butter London has a bold nail color foursome called I Want Candy that will make your heart skip a beat.

Tried-It Tuesday: Get Shine-Free Skin

Written on December 7, 2010 at 6:01 am , by

It’s no secret that I have an oily complexion. It seems like the more I try to fight it, the worse it actually gets. Instead of battling it with harsh chemicals and rubbing alcohol, I’ve learned a few tricks along the way to work with my slick skin:

Moisturize- Never skip the moisturizer. If you skimp out on moisturizer your skin actually produces more oil because it’s thirsty. We like Origins Zero Oil moisturizer with Saw Palmetto & Mint. It’s super-lightweight and hydrating, with a hint of salicylic acid to instantly reduce shine.

Go oil-free- Look for foundations and powders that are free of added oils that can build up on top on your already oily skin. I like MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation. It goes on smooth and the result is a matte look that helps minimize the appearance of oil.

Blot away- To get rid of excess oil during the day, I never leave the house without blotting sheets. My favorite are Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets. They soak up the oil without smudging your makeup—and they’re compact enough to fit in your pocket, which is great for the on-the-go girl!

Tried-It Tuesday: Your Perfect Purple

Written on October 19, 2010 at 7:25 am , by

Beauty trends come and go, but one seems to pop up over and over: purple eye shadow. Lilac lids were all the buzz on the beauty scene this summer, and have gracefully made their way into fall. Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Kate Hudson have all sported purple shades, and this is one celeb trend you’ll want to follow.

But before you go out and grab as many  shadows as you can get your hands on, follow our guide to choosing the best hue for your skin tone.

Fair Skin: Pick shades with silver pigments and shimmery undertones to compliment your light complexion. For a daytime look, go with lilacs and other soft purples, like glimmer-flecked  Youngblood Pressed Eyeshadow in Prism . For evening, CoverGirl Eye Enhancers Eye Shadow in Purple Pop lends a more dressed-up look.

Olive Skin: This is the category I fall into. To compliment my skin, I use matte shades that don’t clash with my olive tones. To really make my brown eyes pop, I like pastel purples, which also work great on green eyes! Some of my personal favorite shadows are Clinique Colour Surge Eye Shadow in Night Plum and M.A.C. Cosmetics Eye Shadow in Fig. 1.

Dark Skin: The combination of purple shadow and dark skin can be an intense one. It’s important to compliment that intensity by using deep plums that blend well with dark tones, or shimmery shades to contrast them. Try Revlon Luxurious Color Perle Eye Shadow in Lilac Shimmer for day, and Lancôme Sensational Effects Eye Shadow Smooth Hold in Trendy for a night out.

When wearing purple shadows, remember to keep the color below your eyelid crease. Pair your shadow with a sheer blush and a pinky-nude lip to complete the look (and keep all the attention on your eyes)!
