It seems like as soon as summer hits, a wave of products flood the shelves, boasting of melt-proof magic, heat-withstanding hold and overall hot-weather defying voodoo. And yet, by the time I get home from work—scratch that—by the time 3 p.m. rolls around, these supposed makeup “miracles” have caked up in my fine lines or slid down to various regions of my face. (Not so pretty.) Just when I’d almost resigned myself to perpetual raccoon eyes and creased shadows, I stumbled upon Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Cream Eyeshadow ($23, sephora.com). Holy wow. This creamy, hyper-pigmented pot of shadow is pure magic. Its not-too-thick, not-too-thin consistency is perfect for a swipe of sheer color, or to be layered for a stunning, opaque look that truly holds up all day. One 8 a.m. application of Aqua Cream #52 lasted through a 104-degree outdoor commute, a sweat-drenched Zumba class and a constant cycle of allergy sneezes. Yet, by the time I got home, my eyes still looked just as creaseless and fresh as they had 12 hours prior. And despite Aqua Cream’s waterproof formula, my lids easily wiped clean with only a little makeup remover. Although $23 per pot may seem a little pricey, trust me—it’s absolutely worth it.

Makeup primers may seem like just another tiresome step in your primping routine, but the skin-perfecting and makeup-maintaining benefits make them worthwhile for many. Here’s our—well, primer—on primers:
- Face: Using a foundation primer like the Laura Mercier Foundation Primer as the last step in your routine before makeup acts like an undetectable spackle, filling in any crevices or imperfections so makeup goes on smoothly. Face primer also helps makeup stay on for as long as possible. There are versions of foundation primer that also treat and/or mask specific skin issues like acne, redness and dullness.
- Eyes: Using an eye primer, such as Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, before applying your favorite shadow or liner will provide you with an even, neutral canvas so the color goes on true, and prevents pigments from disappearing, migrating or creasing.
Are makeup primers part of your routine? If so, what are your must-haves?
