Favorite Find Friday: Noya Classic Lip Balm

Written on March 7, 2014 at 1:47 pm , by

A good lip balm is like good skincare for your lips—it’s the perfect base for your look. We all know how bad foundation and blush can look on dry, rough skin. The same goes for a bold lip color or shiny gloss over chapped, flaky lips—not a pretty look. I’ve recently been slathering on Noya Classic Lipbalm ($4, noyabeauty.com). Not only does it keep my lips feeling soft and supple, it’s made of just four all-natural, kosher ingredients: extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, beeswax and organic stevia. Sounds a little like your kitchen pantry, right? It’s one of the most natural balms out there, which makes me feel good since we inadvertently end up consuming some of our lip products. It comes in three other flavors as well: Vanilla, Cherry and Spearmint and for every lip balm purchased, Noya will donate one to a homeless person in need through The National Health Care for the Homeless. It’s easy to take something as basic as lip balm for granted, but now you can treat yourself and help someone else in need, all at the same time.

Head-To-Toe Dry Skin Solutions: Arctic Weather Edition

Written on February 11, 2014 at 11:40 am , by

With not one but two polar vortexes under our belts, those of us in the Northeast are cold, cranky and, well, feeling anything but sexy (think chapped lips, cracking hands and flaky legs—gross). We’ve rounded up some of the most moisturizing potions to keep your skin happy and hydrated because, let’s face it, winter has only just begun (wah!).

Face: CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion ($14, walgreen.com)
This dermatologist favorite provides a controlled release of essential ceramides and other skin-soothing ingredients throughout the day so your skin stays supple from the time you eat breakfast until you hit the sack.

Lips: Mustela Hydra Stick ($10, sephora.com)
Protect your pout with this convenient little stick. Made with cold cream, shea butter and beeswax, it infuses moisture into your lips or anywhere your skin needs it (like around your nose or even your cheeks). Tuck it in your pocket for quick touch-ups while you’re shredding the slopes (or after you’ve endured a rough commute).

Hands: Fresh Brown Sugar Hand Cream ($19, sephora.com)
If only mittens could keep your hands both warm and moisturized. Slather on this rich lotion, which contains shea butter and vitamin E to prevent moisture loss. The caramel and brown sugar scent is intoxicating, yet 100 percent guilt-free!

Body: Jergens Crema Deep Conditioning Shea Butter Body Cream ($7, drugstore.com)
Turn your post-shower routine into a little daily indulgence with this tub of luxurious body cream. Rich shea butter quenches scaly skin, and it absorbs quickly so you can slip into your coziest sweater/leggings combo and prepare to bear the elements.

Feet: Soap & Glory Heel Genius Amazing Foot Cream ($16, Sephora stores)
Sleep your way to softer heels with this yummy foot cream. Just massage a generous amount onto clean feet, slip on cotton socks and drift off. Macadamia oil, menthol and orange and lemon fruit acids will work the night shift so that come morning, your soles will be soft and soothed.

Hair: Kérastase Masque Nutri-Thermique ($18, keratase-usa.com)
Often we’re so focused on taking care of our skin in the winter (the flakes!), we neglect our strands. This heat-activated deep-conditioning hair mask nourishes  locks from roots to tips and protects your mane from drying-out in the future. Yes, please!

Other Problem Areas: Avéne XeraCalm A.D. Lipid-Replenishing Cream ($32, dermstore.com)
Specially created for eczema-prone skin, this cream will soothe, relieve discomfort and soften tender skin. It’s safe for use on the face and body on infants and adults. Whether you have eczema or not, this cream has your dry spots covered (literally)!

Favorite Find Friday: Chapstick Cupcake Creations

Written on March 29, 2013 at 9:32 am , by

I have a serious sweet tooth but try to curb my cravings and only indulge once in a while (chocolate is my weakness!). Lucky for me, I recently stumbled upon Chapstick limited-edition Cupcake Creations ($2, drugstores) available in decadent Cake Batter and Velvet Cupcake flavors. They glide on lips like butter and instantly make any flakes disappear. But the best part, of course, is that they’re 100 percent guilt-free. And though they aren’t quite as satisfying as a cupcake, I’ll be reaching for these balms as a treat numerous times a day.

Favorite Find Friday: The Beauty Department’s V-Day Makeup Picks

Written on February 8, 2013 at 10:42 am , by

With Valentine’s Day less than a week away, there’s no better time to get all romantic and wear the most classic color in the beauty world: red (obvi). From sheer cherry to true red to vampy oxblood, there’s a shade for everyone. Here, three sexy ways to wear it.

On your lips for day:
Clinique Chubby Stick Intense Moisturizing Lip Color Balm in Mightiest Maraschino ($16, clinique.com)
“After trying red after red, this one is now my favorite go-to red lipstick. The juicy cherry color—it’s the perfect combo of red and pink—pops against my ivory skin tone. The subtle shine makes it feel fresh and less severe than a matte lipstick. Plus, the hydrating formula keeps my lips feeling soft all day—very kissable!”
-Molly Ritterbeck, associate beauty editor

On your lips for night:
L’Oréal Paris Infallible 8hr Lip Gloss in Cherry Flash ($10, lorealparis.com)
“I usually stay away from red because it can be a little tricky to pull off, but this sheer gloss makes it so easy. It’s so long-lasting—perfect for long nights when re-applying is not always convenient. The vibrant color stays true and leaves my lips looking full and shiny.”
-Jessica Carter, beauty intern

On your nails:
Kevyn Aucoin The Nail Lacquer in Blood Roses ($26, Barney’s stores)
“I was never a huge fan of red nails until I swiped on this deep berry plum polish. It has a black base so it’s a little grungier than most red shades. I wear two coats of it on short, squoval nails and feel instantly chic.”

Erin Andrews Dishes on Beauty Products, Working Out, and Degree’s New Contest

Written on September 19, 2012 at 5:06 pm , by

Erin Andrews reporting from the sidelines.

Sports broadcaster, Erin Andrews, has a busy fall ahead of her. She recently joined Fox Sports as part of the new college football broadcast team where she will host pregame shows from the sidelines. She is also the face of Degree Women Clinical Protection’s new contest, “Unapologetically Strong,” which encourages women to share their personal challenges on Facebook for a chance to win $5,000 to reach their goals. Andrews let us in on how to score the cash, stay in shape, and why she loves Gisele Bündchen.

Tell me about the Degree Women Clinical Protection’s Unapologetically Strong contest and why you wanted to be involved.

“Degree is celebrating women who are unapologetically strong—women who are pushing the boundaries in their life, career and in anything that they’ve had success with. You don’t have to feel bad for how hard you worked for it and all the effort that you’ve put forward and all the success that you’ve had. There are a lot of times—and I know I do it with myself—if anyone gives you any sort of credit, you don’t want to make a big deal out of it. But you don’t need to apologize for it. Be unapologetically strong! If you go to Degree’s Facebook  page, you can share your Unapologetically Strong story and you can read everybody else’s stories. There’s a chance to win $5,000.”

If you were eligible to win the $5,ooo to achieve your goal, how would you use it?

“I’m really fascinated right now with these groups of women who have gone through a tough time that maybe don’t have the means to dress for a job interview. I would maybe give it to a group that could help women who are coming off a tough time and need to get out in the workforce.”

Let’s talk beauty: what are some of your favorite products?

“A good skin cream! I travel a lot from Los Angeles to New York every single week. I like to use La Mer (www.cremedelamer.com). They have a really thick cream that I use at night. I love Crest 3D White Strips (www.3dwhite.com). I use the strips and then I use the toothpaste all the time because I’m pumping in coffee and green tea religiously, so I know it’s definitely coloring my teeth. I also love lip gloss. I have about 40 in my purse. I really like the nude Laura Mercier lip glosses (www.lauramercier.com). Anything with a good shine is fabulous! I’m obsessed with dry shampoo right now. I love anything to texturize and really dirty up your hair. I’m obsessed with Marisa Miller and Gisele’s hair—they are the hair models of the world so anything I can do to get their beachy, Victoria’s Secret look is OK by me. Oh, and Kérastase hair products (www.kerastase-usa.com), anything that helps and moisturizes my hair after I beat it up at work all the time.”

You have an exciting new position with FOX Sports so you’re constantly surrounded by crazy-fit athletes. How do you stay in shape?

“I try to get it in my head, even though I know it’s not realistic, that I want to work out every single day and if I can’t work out one day then I excuse myself but I need to definitely try to make the effort to do something everyday. Not so much for my health or to rationalize what I eat, but just for my sanity. I live in a world where it’s just high pressure—I’m reading social networks, I’m running here, I’m on a plane, everything is nuts! So I really try to do it to calm myself down. I moved to New York in January and my latest craze are barre classes. I was doing Pure Barre for a while. I’m now doing Physique 57 and I’m really loving that. My building is connected to Soul Cycle so I need to go downstairs and get right over to Soul Cycle and try that out!”

Have you learned any great tricks from hairstylists or makeup artists?

“I try! I am so bad; half the time I’m just fooling around and not paying attention. The one thing I learned is coming from the South, I used to cake on my makeup and one makeup artist taught me to use a tinted moisturizer for everyday stuff. You don’t need a heavy foundation for everyday use, because apparently that’s all Gisele uses, so if that’s OK for her, it’s OK for me! Basically, I’m getting older; I’m 34. I don’t need to coat on the makeup. The more makeup I have on, I just look older. So I want to keep it fresh and glowy and dewy and act like I look 24!”

How To Sport Sorbet Makeup For Spring

Written on April 23, 2012 at 3:16 pm , by

The sorbet shades taking makeup counters by storm this spring might look intimidating— green lip gloss, blue on cheeks?— but they’re surprisingly sheer and wearable (hint: one at a time, not at all once!). Here, our top picks for the season and the best way to sport them.

EYES Yves Saint Laurent 5 Color Harmony for Eyes in 13 holds a mix of pink, blue, green, purple and yellow shadow hues to brighten your eyes. Wear them individually as sheer washes of color or dip an eyeliner brush in water and trace close to your lashline for a subtle pop of color. Keep the rest of your makeup light in the pinky-neutral family to make your eyes stand out.

CHEEKS Reminiscent of a Jackson Pollock painting, Givenchy Limited Edition Unique Compact Powder in Spring Glow mixes classic pink with skin tone-evening dashes of purple to counteract sallowness and green to neutralize redness. It’s best for fair to medium skin tones and a great choice for those who already have some rosiness in their cheeks but want a touch of definition and glow.

LIPS Creamy lilac Aveda Rehydrating Lip Glaze in Beach Thistle (below, left) and shimmery mint Lancôme Paris Color Fever Gloss in Green Petal (below, right) can be worn alone as a fresh take on nude (pair with deeper gray or brown eye makeup and pink cheeks so you don’t look washed out) or on top of your favorite lipstick to soften and add shine to the hue.

COMPLEXION Sweep purple, blue and champagne-hued Clé de Peau Beauté Luminizing Face Enhancer in 11 along your cheekbones to create a soft-focus, candlelit luminosity.

The Makeup Must-Haves in My Gym Bag

Written on January 24, 2012 at 11:26 am , by

Going home after the gym to get ready for a night out isn’t always an option, but looking good after your sweat session doesn’t require a complete makeover! For those quick changes, I keep these essentials stashed in my gym bag.

Smashbox Sheer Focus Tinted Moisturizer blurs any imperfections and redness while lending a touch of glow. It’s lightweight, so I don’t look too “made up” after a workout.

NARS The Multiple in Orgasm smudged on eyes, cheeks and lips gives a flattering, flushed look. Monochromatic makeup (using the same shade on each feature) is a no-brainer: It looks chic, fresh and pulled-together in seconds.

I finish off my look with a few coats of  L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Naturale Mascara to make my gaze look wide-eyed and natural. These three little items take me from postworkout to a night out fast!
