Download This: A New App Lets You Try On Makeup Before You Buy!

Written on July 2, 2014 at 1:51 pm , by

Bold lip and eye looks can intimidate even us makeup junkies. How do you know if that fuchsia lipstick you saw your coworker applying in the bathroom will look as chic on you? L’Oréal Paris is finally putting an end to the makeup-purchasing guessing game! Introducing the first-ever virtual makeup tester app Makeup Genius (available to download for free here). This app allows you to test out L’Oréal Paris products before you buy them and experiment with full-faced beauty looks you’ve been dying to try. Makeup Genius transforms your smartphone’s front-facing camera into a virtual mirror that allows you to see what the products would look like on. But this is not like the virtual makeup tools of the past where things look wonky and don’t quite line up. This is a first-of-its-kind augmented reality tool that captures head movements, tracks facial points and examines skin texture for exact feature display in order to get a perfectly accurate read of your face. (Honestly, you have to see it to believe it!) The steps are simple: just scan your face, choose a product or a look offered in the catalogue (you can scan L’Oréal products while at the store, too!) and begin testing out your personalized makeup look. I was able to sit on my couch in sweats and try on dozens of lipsticks, eye shadow palettes and foundations without having to venture into the overwhelming beauty aisles at the drugstore or the somewhat terrifying makeup counters for some new finds. Amazingly, all of the makeup applied virtually moved with my face, in real time as if it had been expertly applied and I was looking in a mirror. I was able see how the colors looked with various facial expressions and in different lighting. After finding a look you love, you can buy your desired product directly through the app, making your beauty shopping hassle-free. So for all you crazy busy beauty addicts out there, your new look can now be tried, tested and purchased all from the comfort of your couch! Now that’s genius!

Check out these fun pics of me playing with the app:

The 4 Best Beauty Apps (Plus a Bonus Fashion App!)

If you’re like us, you could get lost in the Sephora aisles and die happy. But who has time for that? Between early-morning workouts and evening plans, looking good can sometimes feel like a struggle. But busy bees and beauty junkies take note—your routine is about to get a lot easier. We’ve rounded up the best free apps on the market to help you maximize your time without sacrificing your style.

Beautylish: This app is the ultimate on-the-go resource for beauty enthusiasts who spend way too much time browsing Pinterest and Youtube. Get quick inspiration with step-by-step tutorials and gorgeous hair, nail and makeup designs, or check out the community forums for product reviews and prices before you hit the drugstore. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you when you get obsessed with this app! (Available for iOS,Android.)

Hair Cast: Nothing is more frustrating than spending an hour blowing out your hair, only to have it puff up the moment you step outside. Next time, check to see if frizz is on your forecast with Hair Cast by Clairol. Just enter your hair type and zip code, and this handy app quickly figures out how your hair will hold up in local weather conditions, while also giving you a customized styling tip. It’s like having a personal weatherman in your pocket—except, you know, reliable. (Available for iOS, Android.)

OPI: If you’ve ever sneakily tested a dozen nail polish colors before buying one, this app is for you. OPI’s virtual studio takes the guesswork out of polish picking by helping you select your best shade through an adjustable skin-tone finder. You can also browse through OPIs newest collections, save favorite polishes for later and connect to Facebook for OPI’s top tips. It’s simple, mess-free fun. (Available for iOS)

MyUVAlert: We’re sticklers about sun safety here at FITNESS, and you should be, too! Thankfully, Coppertone has made being sun-savvy even easier with MyUVAlert. Just type in your zip code to get real-time UV index forecasts, recommendations on sun protection gear, customized tips and—our favorite—timed sunscreen reminders. (Bye bye, sunburns!). (Available for iOS, Android.)

Closet: You’ve worn your clothes a hundred times, your drawers are jam-packed and yet every morning, you can’t find anything to wear. Sound familiar? Enter: the Closet app, which lets you browse your outfits on the go, so you can plan a week’s worth of looks wherever and whenever you want. Just take pics of your clothes, organize them into categories, build an outfit and add the completed looks to a calendar. You can even keep track of when you last wore something, so no more “didn’t I just wear this?” uncertainty. (Available for iOS)
