Easy Holiday Nail Ideas

Written on December 23, 2013 at 9:00 am , by

A festive manicure is your ticket to looking party ready. Whether you want to go all out with glitter or rock a subtle take on sparkle, we whipped up some nail looks to get you into the holiday spirit:

To really let your holiday spirit shine, try this standout combo: apply two coats of your favorite red—we like Clinique Nail Enamel in Red Red Red ($13, clinique.com)—and top it with a sparkly polish, like KB Shimmer Kringle All the Way ($9, kbshimmer.com). Apply the sparkles to all ten tips or just one bling finger like we did.

If you’re in the mood for a sophisticated take on shimmer, try pairing a deep eggplant polish with textured gold flakes. We like Julep in Jillian ($14, julep.com) and Gianna ($14, julep.com). Apply two coats of the eggplant then add a drop of the gold glitter to the base of the nail near the cuticle and lightly drag it toward the tip for a faded effect. Finish with a clear topcoat.

For a more understated way to do glitter, we like this holiday polish from Essie in Toggle to the Top ($9, Ulta.com), which already has the sparkle in the polish. Just apply two coats and finish with a quick-dry topcoat.

Not a fan of sparkle? No problem! Nothing says holiday more than a classic red polish. Here are some of our new favorites. Swipe on two coats and finish with a topcoat.

OPI Mariah Carey Holiday Nail Lacquer Collection, In My Santa Suit ($9, ulta.com),

Deborah Lippmann Limited Edition Silk Matteen Nail Polish in Red Silk Boxers ($19, neimanmarcus.com),

Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Rouge Rubis ($27, chanel.com)

Boscia Pink Peppermint Blotting Linens ($5, boscia.com)
Leave the shine for the tinsel—and dab away excess oil on your t-zone with these peppermint-scented blotting sheets. Each sparkly, pink package comes with 100 sheets, which reduce shine without messing up your holiday makeup (because we know how hard you worked on it).

Benefit Show Me The Love Set ($36, benefitcosmetics.com)
Every makeup bag could use this set of essentials. Primer, mascara and blush come in this cute pop art tin, which doubles as the perfect makeup brush holder.

L’Occitane Hand Indulgences Set ($28, sephora.com)
Hand cream is a good go-to gift and L’Occitaane has made it especially easy to give this holiday season with this set of three limited edition hand creams. In jasmine, violet and rose scents plus a formula made with 20 percent shea butter, the lucky recipient is going to have a hard time choosing which one to slather on first.

Marc Jacobs Rollerball Trio Gift Set ($39, nordstrom.com)

Because when else can you justify buying a purple blinged out eyelash curler?! The sparkly beauty tool also comes with a tube of Tarte’s Deluxe Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 mascara so your lashes will stand out when standing under the mistletoe.

Gift Guide (Guy Edition): The Best Grooming Products For Your Man

Written on December 9, 2013 at 10:23 am , by

The perfect gift can be hard to find, especially for those special guys in your life. Whether it be your hubby, boyfriend, brother, dad or friend, dudes are usually stocked up on the basics, like socks, ties, shirts and underwear. The one thing most guys usually don’t treat themselves to: You guessed it—beauty—er, “grooming” products. So we’ve rounded up some of our favorite giftable picks that’ll make him smile (and smell good, too!) just in time for the holidays.

Bulldog Skincare Holiday Bundle ($25, us.meetthebulldog.com)
This kit takes the guesswork out of a man’s skincare routine. With an easy three-step system, any guy can manage using the Original Face Wash, Shave Gel and Moisturiser. The best part: it comes with a man-friendly carrying case so he can stash all his bathroom essentials in an easy-to-go pouch—perfect for travel.

Jack Black Balm Squad Lip Quad ($25, nordstrom.com)
Sick of him always stealing your lip balm? Well now he can have his own. Jack Black has created the perfect lip balm for men. This holiday set includes four flavors of moisturizing SPF 25 Intense Therapy Lip Balms that any guy wouldn’t mind pulling out of his pocket. Bonus: it’ll get his lips ready for your mistletoe moment!

Dolce & Gabbana The One for Men 2014 Limited Edition ($82, neimanmarcus.com)
Cologne is the perfect gift for the holidays because, let’s be honest, what man goes fragrance shopping for himself? Whether he only wears it on special occasions or on the daily, this limited edition Dolce & Gabbana The One for Men will please any nose with its notes of grapefruit, coriander, basil, ginger and a touch of tobacco. And with its sleek platinum bottle, you won’t mind if he leaves this one out on the bathroom counter.

Sephora Collection The Self Made Man Dopp Kit ($38, sephora.com)
This handy kit includes all of the necessities, like nail clippers, nose scissors, a lint brush and even a bottle opener! It’s all neatly packed away in a leather carrying case so you can know where to find it when an emergency strikes—the perfect gift for the guy-on-the-go on your list.

Trunk Club ($100-$300 per piece, trunkclub.com)
The only thing guys hate worse than shopping for you (give them a break, it’s hard!) is shopping for themselves. Enter Trunk Club, a website that sends you a customized wardrobe, handpicked by a stylist, based on answers to a personal style quiz. They send multiple options with a prepaid return slip to send back whatever you don’t like so you’re not charged until after you choose your items. Talk about convenient! Any stylish stud would love this monthly surprise.

Swiss Stays ($8-$50, swissstays.com)
For the guy you’re not so sure what to give or the guy who has everything, this is the gift he didn’t even know he needed! These adjustable collar stays will leave him wondering how he ever lived without them. They expand to four different sizes to fit all 24 different collar sizes on the market so he’ll always look sharp in a dress shirt.

Written on December 5, 2013 at 2:07 pm , by

Jane Cosmetics is making that possible this holiday season with their Gift of Confidence & Care Campaign. Now until December 27th, the company will donate one beauty product for each item sold on janecosemetics.com and at participating Kohl’s, Ulta Beauty, Bealls, Palais Royal and Peebles’ stores in California, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey and Texas to more than 25 women’s shelters and charitable organizations in those states (as if we needed another reason to buy makeup!). Easy Halloween Nail Art Ideas

Written on October 28, 2013 at 2:26 pm , by

These simple Halloween tricks are sure to make your nails a treat!

Get Your Glow On

All eyes will be on your tips at your costume party with a set of glow-in-the-dark nails. The Ciaté Corrupted Neon Manicure Kit ($25, Sephora.com) contains a matte neon polish, loose neon glitter in the same color and a top coat, which transforms the polish into a glowing hue under a black light. The kit comes in in four neon shades. We chose Club Tropicana, a bright orange. Simply apply two coats of color and finish with the topcoat. Add the matching glitter to an accent nail on each hand.

Bewitching Tips

These jewel-toned polishes will cast a spell on their admirers. Just in time for the holiday, Deborah Lippmann created Wicked 10th Anniversary Limited Edition Collection ($29, sephora.com), a trio of polishes that celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Broadway musical, Wicked. You can wear each color alone or combine two (Defying Gravity and One Short Day) like we did above. Start with two layers of your base shade then paint a stripe with an accent color down the middle of your nail. Finish with a clear topcoat.

Bad to the Bone

Have an edgy costume planned or want to let your inner alter ego out for the night? You can show off your rock star side with OPI Rock Goddess Mini Lacquer Set ($13, ulta.com). There are four bold shades and a skull charm bracelet to complete the look. Wear any polish alone or use one as an accent. We paired Stand in Lime for Days and Rolling Bones to create a Frankenstein-inspired look. Apply the citrusy lime green then using a small detail brush, trace your tips with the shimmery metallic black then lock it in place with a top coat.

Stick-er It Out

For an even easier and faster way to show your spooky spirit, try some ghost and goblin inspired nail stickers, like  Jamberry Candy Corn and Mummified Nail Wraps ($15 each, jamberry.com) or Kiss Nail Artist Halloween Nail Art ($3, drugstores). Arrange them any way you want, on one nail or all. With multiple styles and shapes you can create a customized look in no time.

Holiday Makeup Tips

Written on December 19, 2012 at 3:32 pm , by

Neutrogena celebrity makeup artist Amy Oresman helps stars like Molly Sims, Zoe Saldana and Bridget Moynihan stun on the red carpet. We asked her to share insider secrets so you’ll be party-ready for any occasion this holiday season.

Go Back to Basics
“Create an everyday look that works for you. You need foundation, blush or bronzer, eyeliner, mascara and a lip color. These are what you put on everyday and just go. For a nighttime look, you just add more of your daytime basics. Many women mistakenly believe they need two sets of makeup and two different looks for day and night. You don’t; you just need to take your signature look and boost it a bit. One of my favorite products to add to my basics is the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 15 ($13, neutrogena.com). It’s one of the best primers I’ve used. It goes under your foundation but it also works as a highlighter. I use on top of makeup all the time. It has optical diffusers, so I love it as a highlight under the brow. I’ll even dab it right over shadow on the lid. It gives that beautiful glow without any shine.”

Think Subtle Sparkle
“Women are especially drawn to glitter during the holidays, but you only want to use it as a liner, not as eye shadow. It should never be on your lid. Just use it over your black liner for that accent of glitter. You could pick a gold, you could pick a green, but it should always be a whisper. If it’s anything more than a whisper it looks costume-y. It should never be your focal point. Obviously, if you look like your Christmas tree, you’ve gone wrong!”

Pump Up One Feature
“Do all your beauty basics, then add your accessory piece. That could be a winged liner that could be glitter or that could be a red lip. There are a lot of fun elements to try. I think women always want to feel classy and elegant but they want to have that moment of trend, but yet they don’t want to be trendy. So for me, if you stick to the beauty basics and add an accent like a bright lip, you always look put together. It lets you save a lot of money, too because you just add that one extra piece that you like.”

Pack Smart
“One of the best things you can pack in a clutch is the Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm ($9, neutrogena.com) because you can use it as your blush and your lipstick and it’s tiny! I’m really about double duty beauty. Swipe it on the apples of your cheeks and blend in with your fingers and then use it on your lips. And, of course, pack mascara. I don’t pack powder; there’s a bathroom everywhere you go, so you can blot yourself in the bathroom. Tissue is a great blotter. Plus, if you’re wearing a primer, you don’t’ need to continually put powder on your face. That’s another one of the biggest mistakes women make. Powder is not really your best friend.”

Holiday Tips!

Manicures are my guilty little pleasure– they never fail to make me feel clean and polished (pun intended)! To celebrate the season and spice up my nails, I chose OPI Nail Lacquer in Big Apple Red for my most recent mani. I love pairing the polish with a vibrant red lipstick because it adds a little extra holiday cheer to my style. The classic crimson will last you through the season’s parties and is a chic way to punctuate your look all year long.

Sparkle For Your Strands

Written on December 13, 2011 at 10:34 am , by

The Glisten Up feature in our November/December issue shows you easy ways to put a little glitz in your makeup look this season— but there’s a new category of products made to put some sparkle on your hair. Pomades and mists like Oribe 24-Karat Gold Pomade, Regis Gold Dust Finisher Pomade, Alterna Glitterati Sparkling Champagne Spray and Spun Gold Pomade, and Motions Shine Enhancing Pomade are laced with super-fine, gold-based shimmer that catches the light, making your strands look extra-luminous and amping up your color. If you have long hair, choose a mist; pomades are best for short-haired ladies. To use, spritz or smooth lightly over dry hair, starting at the roots and moving toward the ends.
