Favorite Find Friday: Illume Heirloom Pumpkin Candle

Written on September 20, 2013 at 1:48 pm , by

This Sunday marks the first day of fall, aka my absolute favorite season. Don’t get me wrong; there are great things about spring, summer and winter, but fall is the quarter my birthday falls in, it reminds me of being back home in Pennsylvania where the leaves turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red, and it means I officially have the green light to indulge in all pumpkin everything. Whether it’s a flavored coffee in the morning or a spiced treat for dessert, the tastes and smells of pumpkin are comforting during the chillier autumn months. Last night, I swapped out all of the bright, summery decorations in my apartment for more rustic options—burnt orange flowers in a mason jar, twine-embellished frames and Illume’s Heirloom Pumpkin Metallic Knob Tin Candle ($24, illumecandles.com). It’s luxe metallic amber tin, which glows when lit, makes any room feel instantly cozier. As the rich scent of creamy pumpkin pureé mixes with warm vanilla, dark brown sugar and cinnamon spice, you’d swear your mom had snuck in and been baking all day. So until Thanksgiving, it looks like I’ll be relying on burning these candles every night to keep homesickness at bay.

Four Fall Trends To Try Right Now!

Written on November 12, 2012 at 5:14 pm , by

Sequin eyebrows, purple lips, crimped hair—some runway trends look like they belong in a circus. We made simple tweaks to a few of our favorite looks so that you can wear them in real life.

Oxblood Nails: This vampy red hue is popping up everywhere in the fashion world. Think it’s too bold for your wardrobe? Test-drive it on your nails first (the dark shade looks best on short, squoval-shaped tips). Our top picks: CND Nail Colour in Dark Ruby ($9, cnd.com) and Zoya Nail Polish in Oxblood Red ($8, zoya.com).

Messy Topknot: Tired of your ponytail whipping your neck while you log miles on the treadmill? Meet the topknot. It’s just as easy to do but looks cooler. Secure a high ponytail then wrap the tail around the base, creating a knot—it doesn’t have to be perfect; the more casual, the better. Leave the bejeweled headband at home.

Shimmery Green Eyes: Update your typical smoky eyes with green shadow. Tip: Snag trendy colors (like green!) at the drugstore. Sweep a wash over your lids or rim your upper lash lines for a toned down version of the winged green shadow below.

Sheer Red Lips: Rushing from a workout to the office? Save time by swiping on a tinted red lip balm and keeping the rest of your face natural. You’ll look pulled together but by swapping a balm for the lipstick version, you won’t need a lip brush or a ton of mirror time.

Tried-It Tuesday: Your Perfect Purple

Written on October 19, 2010 at 7:25 am , by

Beauty trends come and go, but one seems to pop up over and over: purple eye shadow. Lilac lids were all the buzz on the beauty scene this summer, and have gracefully made their way into fall. Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Kate Hudson have all sported purple shades, and this is one celeb trend you’ll want to follow.

But before you go out and grab as many  shadows as you can get your hands on, follow our guide to choosing the best hue for your skin tone.

Fair Skin: Pick shades with silver pigments and shimmery undertones to compliment your light complexion. For a daytime look, go with lilacs and other soft purples, like glimmer-flecked  Youngblood Pressed Eyeshadow in Prism . For evening, CoverGirl Eye Enhancers Eye Shadow in Purple Pop lends a more dressed-up look.

Olive Skin: This is the category I fall into. To compliment my skin, I use matte shades that don’t clash with my olive tones. To really make my brown eyes pop, I like pastel purples, which also work great on green eyes! Some of my personal favorite shadows are Clinique Colour Surge Eye Shadow in Night Plum and M.A.C. Cosmetics Eye Shadow in Fig. 1.

Dark Skin: The combination of purple shadow and dark skin can be an intense one. It’s important to compliment that intensity by using deep plums that blend well with dark tones, or shimmery shades to contrast them. Try Revlon Luxurious Color Perle Eye Shadow in Lilac Shimmer for day, and Lancôme Sensational Effects Eye Shadow Smooth Hold in Trendy for a night out.

When wearing purple shadows, remember to keep the color below your eyelid crease. Pair your shadow with a sheer blush and a pinky-nude lip to complete the look (and keep all the attention on your eyes)!

Pumpkin, Spice and Everything Nice

Written on October 6, 2010 at 6:37 am , by

With fall well under way, haunted hayrides and homemade apple pies aren’t the only things to look forward to this season. Pumpkin-infused beauty products have made their way back into stores, and this time, they’re taking over the beauty scene. Not only do pumpkins make for delicious autumn desserts and side-dishes, but they are also ideal for skincare. Pumpkins are rich in antioxidants, and also contain enzymes with exfoliating properties. And because they are high in vitamin A, vitamin C, and zinc, pumpkin-infused beauty products are a superb choice for those with sensitive skin.

I’ve compiled a list of the Fall 2010 pumpkin-infused beauty must-haves, which are available at Sephora, except where noted:

1) Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Gentle Exfoliating Treatment

2) Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Peel

3) Philosophy Pumpkin Spice Lip Shine

4) Zia Treatments Pumpkin Exfoliating Mask (found at Zia Natural Skincare)

Too many trips to the pumpkin patches? Don’t throw out those leftover jack-o-lanterns! Try an easy at-home mask by combining 2 tbsp mashed pumpkins, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp honey, and 1/2 tsp milk, and applying to your face for 15 minutes. Will you try pumpkin-infused products this fall?
