E.L.F. Cosmetics Creative Director, Achelle Dunaway, Shares Her Half Marathon Beauty Secrets and Motivation Tips

By day, Dunaway oversees the product and brand development, entertainment marketing and editorial copy for E.L.F. Cosmetics (a cute and affordable makeup and skincare line). But during her down time, she spent the past 10 weeks pounding the pavement and training hard for her first half marathon in East Hampton, New York. As a makeup artist, she let us in on her race-day beauty recap as well as what kept her going through 13.1 miles.

What was your race-day makeup plan? Did you even wear any?

“When running a long race, it’s ideal not to wear too much makeup that could create a ‘melting effect’—aka, a smudgy mess. I always want to look and feel my best so I kept a pretty basic beauty look. I prepped my face with primer to create a long-lasting hold. My favorite is the E.L.F. Mineral Infused Face Primer ($6, eyeslipsface.com). And since I’m outside, I always wear sunscreen. I pair that with tinted moisturizer with additional SPF, spot concealer, sweat-proof mascara, a little bronzer and blush and lip balm with SPF.”

What hairstyle worked best for you while training?

“I wear my hair in a high ponytail that is doubled up on hair ties in case one breaks, and I always run with a backup around my wrist. I also sport a cute headband to keep flyaways down.”

What was the hardest thing about training?

“Traveling. It was difficult to fit in my training during the summer months with vacations, but I would always try to run on my trips or compensate by running longer runs on my shorter run days to catch up.”

What advice do you have for others preparing for their first half marathon?

“Sign up with friends! I ran this race with three friends. Their encouragement helped me stay focused and excited through training. Plus, let’s be serious, I totally wanted a fun Instagram photo to post on Facebook!”

How do you stay focused through all 13.1 miles?

“Music is essential. I jam away to my own personal dance party and set my Pandora playlist to the Rihanna station. It keeps the songs fresh and unexpected as opposed to listening from my own music list.”

What made you want to do a half marathon?

“It was on my life bucket list! Sometimes you have to push yourself to try and do things you never thought you could, because when you realize that you can, you continue to set your limits higher.”

Favorite Find Friday: Murad Intensive-C Radiance Peel

It’s rare that a facial treatment product produces immediate, noticeable results. Murad Intensive-C Radiance Peel is one of the few exceptions. We smooth the faintly citrus-scented glycolic acid cream-gel over our face, leave it on for ten minutes you’ll feel a bit of tingling then rinse to reveal a complexion that’s so vibrant and glowy it’s almost reflective, but with none of the redness or irritation normally associated with peels. Our time-saving trick: Slather it on before you step in the shower so it works while you wash, then rinse before you get out.

Does Your Face Have a “Good” Side?

Both sides of your face may not be created equal.

If you’ve ever joked with someone (or not joked!) about only photographing your best side, you might be on to something: A Wake Forest University study published in the journal Experimental Brain Research found that people perceive the left side of others’ faces as more appealing than the right side, perhaps because the left side of the face is more emotionally evocative, according to research. This finding is reflected in Western art, with the majority of artists portraying the left side of faces.

Tell us: Do you think your face has a better side? If so, which one?

How To Sport Sorbet Makeup For Spring

The sorbet shades taking makeup counters by storm this spring might look intimidating— green lip gloss, blue on cheeks?— but they’re surprisingly sheer and wearable (hint: one at a time, not at all once!). Here, our top picks for the season and the best way to sport them.

EYES Yves Saint Laurent 5 Color Harmony for Eyes in 13 holds a mix of pink, blue, green, purple and yellow shadow hues to brighten your eyes. Wear them individually as sheer washes of color or dip an eyeliner brush in water and trace close to your lashline for a subtle pop of color. Keep the rest of your makeup light in the pinky-neutral family to make your eyes stand out.

CHEEKS Reminiscent of a Jackson Pollock painting, Givenchy Limited Edition Unique Compact Powder in Spring Glow mixes classic pink with skin tone-evening dashes of purple to counteract sallowness and green to neutralize redness. It’s best for fair to medium skin tones and a great choice for those who already have some rosiness in their cheeks but want a touch of definition and glow.

LIPS Creamy lilac Aveda Rehydrating Lip Glaze in Beach Thistle (below, left) and shimmery mint Lancôme Paris Color Fever Gloss in Green Petal (below, right) can be worn alone as a fresh take on nude (pair with deeper gray or brown eye makeup and pink cheeks so you don’t look washed out) or on top of your favorite lipstick to soften and add shine to the hue.

COMPLEXION Sweep purple, blue and champagne-hued Clé de Peau Beauté Luminizing Face Enhancer in 11 along your cheekbones to create a soft-focus, candlelit luminosity.

Favorite Find Friday: Yes To Blueberries Travel Cleansing Towelettes

As much as we aspire to do a full sink face wash every evening, more often that not (OK, most nights) we end up relying on cleansing towelettes in our end-of-day delirium. The best of the best (and inexpensive, to boot) are Yes To Blueberries Travel Cleansing Towelettes. We love that this weightless little pack can go anywhere with us (you can buy a 30-count full-size too) and that the supersoft wipes are infused with gently brightening apple and lemon peel extracts. The towelettes themselves are biodegradable, so you don’t have to worry about waste, and unlike others, they remove eye makeup without any stinging or burning.

Be A Model Citizen

From left, bottle designs by Angela Lindvall, Josie Maran and Petra Nemcova.

Cult favorite cure-all Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil is getting the model treatment this month: Catwalk stunners Angela Lindvall and Petra Nemcova, along with Josie herself, have decked the bottles in limited-edition designs that reflect the charity closest to their hearts. Ten percent of the price of each bottle sold will be donated to their respective causes— Healthy Child Healthy World for Angela, Petra’s own Happy Hearts Fund and Women for Women International for Josie. Virtually scent-free, the nongreasy, fast-absorbing argan oil inside is a superb nourisher for face, body and hair. Try rubbing it into cuticles and elbows, onto heels before slipping on socks, adding a few droppers to your bath for a moisture boost, and smoothing over fried strands for an instant hydrating fix.

Customize Your Skincare

You can customize sneakers, frozen yogurt, kitchens—and now skincare: The new bespoke line Truth Art Beauty allows you to co-create your own natural skin products in three simple steps. Choose your base (for example, sea salt or brown sugar for a body scrub), boosters (like antioxidants or anti-aging ingredients) and essential oils (grapefruit, spearmint, orange, lavender, etc.), then your product is custom-blended, so you’re able to see what goes into it from start to finish. Our favorites: The Body Buff, infused with fresh coconut, super-rich Eye Balm (below) and silky, luxurious Body Salve (above).

Warm Up With Self-Heating Products

Cozy up to one of these self-warming beauty products on a chilly winter’s night— they contain ingredients like zeolite and magnesium sulfate, which release heat upon contact with water. The warmth not only soothes sore muscles and elements-exposed skin, but also enhances the penetration of active ingredients. Hot stuff to try:

Favorite Find Friday: FixMySkin Healing Body Balm

Brutally cold temperatures and whipping winds in New York City this week have been seriously punishing for our skin. Since our chapped parts require more than a regular moisturizer, we pulled out the big gun: FixMySkin Healing Body Balm, with one percent hydrocortisone in a base of natural oils and butters to not just soothe, but actually repair tough skin issues like cracks, flakes, eczema and rashes. The twist-up tube resembles an oversized lip balm, perfect for stashing in your gym bag or purse to target stubborn spots like heels, cuticles and elbows. And, although we’re partial to the Vanilla scent, it comes in an unscented version, too.

Tell us: Do you use an all-purpose balm? If so, what’s your favorite?
