Erin Andrews may be on the sidelines when she’s interviewing football players for Fox Sports, but the sunny sportscaster is at the top of her game. With the kick-off of the NFL season upon us, Andrews is putting on her gameface in more ways than one. She was just named ambassador for CoverGirl’s #GameFace campaign. Believe it or not, women make up an impressive 46% of the current NFL fan base so CoverGirl is once again celebrating female fans. Last year, it was all about nails with their sporty “fanicures.” This year, CoverGirl created 32 makeup looks to let women everywhere rep their favorite team. Once you put on your gameface, you can share it on social media, using the “gameface” hashtag. At the end of the NFL season, CoverGirl will award the woman with the best gameface a pair of Super Bowl tickets. Here, Andrews explains why it’s perfectly cool to love makeup and sports.
Tell us more about the new CoverGirl campaign.
“I am very excited; it fits me to a ‘T.’ I like to take care of myself and wear makeup and I love sports. There’s always controversy around that and I think it’s hilarious. It cracks me up. Are we still having this conversation? It’s 2014! It’s ok to love the way you look and love football. I’m ready to put that thinking to bed.”
Amen to that! What’s your first CoverGirl memory?
“I called it ‘my base.’ I used the powder in the green case with the little applicator. It never really matched but it made me feel special. In high school, it was like, ‘I have to go to the bathroom to put my base on.’ It felt so rad. I used it at dance competitions. I’d open my Caboodle and there was my base.”
You are getting ready to hit the road for a crazy busy football season. How do you keep up with your workouts?
“I’m obsessed with Pilates on the reformer. But on the road, I do a bunch of online workouts. Physique 57 has good ones. Or I’ll grab 5-8 pound weights and use them for 30 minutes to get a sweat on. Or I’ll look at the area and find a barre class or Pilates class. I need structure.”
How do you keep your diet in check?
“I’m strict on the road because I know my workouts won’t be the same. And I travel with men and we’ll eat at steakhouses where there’s six appetizers and dessert. I skip the bread, try not to eat pasta with every meal, order fish, but I will have French fries. I focus on portion control, no soda but I don’t deprive myself. I eat a hotdog every game at halftime.”
That’s amazing! What’s your favorite?
“A Fenway Frank but I’m bias. The Dodger Dog is good too.”
Do you do your own makeup?
“I do my own makeup for games. I make sure I look bright around my eyes because they show how tired I am. I have to be there 4 or 5 hours before the game and there’s no room in the bathrooms and the lighting’s bad. I build with concealer throughout the day but I try not to pack it on because it can look crusty. I love the CoverGirl Jumbo Glosses and LashBlast Volume Mascara. I don’t use self tanner because I can’t stand the smell.”
On scorching hot days, how do you prevent looking like a hot mess on the field?
“I drip a lot. I’m just going to put it out there, I’m a stomach sweater. I skip lotion, reapply powder and I dab my face with a Gatorade towel. I don’t have time to care too much about how I look, which is weird because 50 million people are watching me but everything needs to be quick and easy.”
On days when you feel crappy, what’s your confidence-boosting trick?
“Working out; getting a sweat on always clears my head and makes me feel better. And fried chicken.”
Who has been your favorite interview?
“David Ortiz when I gave him the MVP trophy at the World Series last year. He’s one of my dad’s favorite players and on his home team and my dad helped me write my questions.”

If there’s one singer out there who knows how to Get the Party Started, it’s P!NK. On her The Truth About Love Tour, she flies through the air Matrix-style, performs acrobatic moves worthy of the Cirque du Soleil (as proven in last night’s Grammy performance), and tears up the stage with her dance moves all while showing off her rock hard abs—oh, and belting lyrics of course! But that’s just her day job. She’s also a busy working mom and one of the beautiful faces of CoverGirl. We got the chance to grill her on what’s in her beauty bag and how she stays in sick shape.
Your CoverGirl ads are gorgeous and fierce! Did you pick up any cool makeup tips while on set that you can share?
“Well, a lot of people might know this but an eyelash curler really gives your lashes amazing lift. Also, a dab of concealer under the eyes is the best quick-fix for dark circles, especially for tired moms like me.”
What’s one beauty product you have to have right now?
“Right now, I love CoverGirl Bombshell Mascara ($10, covergirl.com). There’s one coat for volume and another coat that intensifies for noticeable lashes. The result is this dark sexy lacquered look. Sometimes a girl just wants to flaunt her sexy!”
What’s the one beauty staple you have to have on everyday?
“I guess I’d have to say foundation, but nothing too heavy or unnatural. The CoverGirl TruBlend Foundation ($10, covergirl.com) is great because it feels really lightweight and it’s so super blendable that even I can’t mess it up.”
For someone who colors their hair often, it must be tough to avoid damage. What do you do to keep your strands healthy?
“I’ve been told that washing it every day can make hair dry but with being on tour and being so active, skipping a wash isn’t really an option. The good thing is that when it’s short like this, I don’t have to use a hairdryer, so that helps and I use a deep conditioning treatment when I have downtime. I’m lucky that I have people to help me with these things!”
Switching gears a bit, your tour is really physical. How do you train and how do you manage to stay in shape while traveling?
“My show is pretty demanding, physically, so on tour, I work out about 5 times a week. I do an hour of cardio and an hour of yoga with my dancers before almost every show. It’s intense, I know. Sometimes I feel more like an athlete than a singer!”
How do you keep your diet on track while you’re on the road?
“I try to eat really healthy most of the time. When I’m not on tour, I’ve done the vegan thing, although I sometimes eat chicken and fish. But on tour is a different story. I don’t beat myself up over every little food choice. If I’m hungry for bread or pasta or a French fry, I eat it. I cannot resist cheesecake! You can’t be too controlled.”
When you’re not touring, how do you find time to fit in a workout as a busy mom?
“I try to find the time to do something active every day, whether it’s hiking or running or anything outdoors. I like the results—feeling strong, and I think that challenging myself physically keeps me more mentally aware so I’m better able to tackle all of the other stuff. Even when you’re not in the mood, it’s worth motivating yourself to do.”

If the men in your life have been spending endless hours doing their fantasy draft and gearing up for game day, listen in: Just in time for the official kickoff tomorrow, CoverGirl is teaming up with the NFL to help you show your team pride with eye-catching nail art (consider it a touchdown for your tips). Starting September 5th at covergirl.com/NFL, 32 customized Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss bundles (prices vary, covergirl.com)—one combo for each team—will be available to help you wear the heart of your home team on your hands. Head to CoverGirl’s Facebook page to get inspired by different looks (like this one for the Pittsburgh Steelers). Then kick off your pre-game in style with a #nailgating session, and share the fangirl designs you come up with. Sundays just got a lot more fun!
And in case you actually go to a game (instead of just watching it from your couch), check this out:
There will be NFL Style Lounges inside select stadiums that will offer complimentary CoverGirl “fanicures” featuring home team-inspired nail art using CoverGirl nail polish. Fans visiting the lounge will get to shop for the newest gear made just for women and have opportunities to consult with a professional stylist, listen to music performed by an on-site DJ and strut their game day style in a team-themed photo booth.
Style Lounges will take place at the following home games: Atlanta Falcons (9/29), Chicago Bears (10/6), Houston Texans (10/13), Jacksonville Jaguars (10/20), Philadelphia Eagles (10/27), Dallas Cowboys (11/3), New York Giants (11/10), Denver Broncos (11/17), Arizona Cardinals (11/24) and Tennessee Titans (12/15).

As much as we love a fun, outdoor workout, we hate how it turns us into hot, sweaty messes. One thing we’re always in awe of: how top-notch athletes manage to look so good! To find out their secrets, we chatted up Christal Engle, the 26-year-old pro-volleyball playerwho has her eyes set on the Olympics in 2016. Engle dished about the beauty products she digs, and how you can score an effortless look pre- and post-workout. You won’t want to pass on this advice before your next friendly competition on the beach!
FITNESS: In your sport, you’re exposed to a lot of sun! How do you protect your skin?
CE: “Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! I carry it wherever I go and apply everywhere, especially on the face, chest and shoulders. That’s what gets the most sun when you’re playing beach volleyball. I use SPF 75 on my face and reapply four or five times per day. I’m only 26 and I already see sun effects. And I wear sunscreen all the time!”
FITNESS: Do you have a favorite brand?
CE: “I use COOLA organic sunscreen. It’s a new company, but they have things for your face and body; they have mist sprays, everything. People don’t realize when they’re in the sun how much it affects them. Even with 75 SPF or whatever, the rays still come through. I’m fairly tan but I wear sunscreen all the time.”
FITNESS: What about makeup? Do you wear it while playing?
CE: “Yes, but not a lot — I’ll just put on waterproof mascara. I’m not one of those super girly-girls who has to cake it on, but you want to perform beautifully. That’s Oakley’s motto [editor’s note: Engle is sponsored by Oakley], and I like to stay pretty and work hard.”
FITNESS: Do you do anything to protect your hair?
CE: “Not really, because I like the natural highlights that I get from the sun. I just had my hair done and I asked them if I should be doing anything specific, and they said just to use sunscreen and get trims every couple of months. But I have to be careful of salt water! If you go into the ocean after a game, you definitely want to get a good shampoo that cleans it really well. I know Neutrogena Clean Replenishing is a good one.”
FITNESS: And I’m sure being out in the sun and sand all day must make you feel dry…
CE: “It does! And I find sand everywhere. It’s ridiculous. I have to moisturize a lot and I make sure that has SPF in it, too.”
How do you make working out look so good? I’m a hot mess when I sweat!
CE: “I recommend using wipes afterward. When we’re working out and playing in the sand, our hands get dirty and we wipe our foreheads, making our faces grimy. Wipes clean that all up – Bioré Daily Cleansing Cloths are great, I also use Evian Facial Mist Spray—it’s amazing! I use it after matches on my face and reapply sunscreen.”
FITNESS: What about when you’re not on the courts? How do you go from game to glam?
CE: “I use two items: mascara and bronzer. Bronzer just brings life to your face – you could be super tired, but if you put that on, it brightens you up. I love L’Oréal Paris Sublime Bronze. For mascara, I use CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion because it doesn’t run when I sweat and it’s super easy to take off, making it perfect for beach volleyball. As for my hair, I love doing a high twisty bun after a game because it works whether it’s wet or dry, and it’s somewhat fashionable.”

- BLUSH = EYE SHADOW Use an eye shadow brush to sweep blush over your eyelids for a pretty, monochromatic look.
- CONCEALER = EYE & LIP PRIMER Neutralize the ruddy pink tones of eyelids and lips with a light layer of your regular concealer: The colors you apply on top with appear truer and last longer.
- EYE SHADOW = HIGHLIGHTER Blend a light-colored neutral cream eye shadow (think champagne or gold), such as CoverGirl Intense ShadowBlast in Beige Blaze, on the tops of cheekbones, cupid’s bow, inner corners of the eyes and under the brows for a believable glow.
- LIP BALM OR LIPSTICK = CHEEK & EYE ENHANCER In a pinch, dab tinted lip balm or lipstick on cheeks and eyes—they can double as a cream blush and eye shadow. Use a clear balm to add a touch of healthy sheen.

And my own creation: Layer lip balm, a rose, pinky-nude or mauve-hued eye shadow, and top with clear lip gloss for a custom-created lip color.

For this week’s Staffer Beauty Snoop, we asked Assistant Fashion Editor Melissa Freeswick to share her primping habits and must-haves:
Describe your beauty style in three words or less: Quick, simple, natural.
What are the three beauty products you can’t live without? 1. BareMinerals Matte SPF 15 Foundation 2. CoverGirl Natural Luxe Mousse Mascara 3. Paul Mitchell Extra-Body Sculpting Foam
What’s your beauty routine in the morning? I run product through my hair after I shower and let it air-dry while I whip up a quick and healthy breakfast. By the time I’m finished, it’s still damp enough to style with the blow-dryer in less than 10 minutes. A quick swipe of mascara, eyeliner, and blush and I’m on my way!
At night? I try to put in a bit more effort for a night out on the town by adding some waves to my hair with a 1 1/2 inch curling iron, a smoky eye, and a hint of bronzer.
Post-workout? I usually work out at night so afterward I just wash my face and apply moisturizer before bed.
What beauty product or treatment instantly makes you feel good? By the end of a long day I feel like most of my makeup has worn off, but adding just a touch of Smashbox Blush makes me feel instantly more presentable for happy hour!
What’s the best beauty tip you’ve ever received (or thought of yourself)? SPF, SPF, SPF! While it’s really nice soak up the sun at the beach, it’s totally not worth having leathery, wrinkled skin when you’re older! Thanks to Lancôme Flash Bronzer Anti-Age Sunless Face Tanner/SPF 15 Moisturizer I protect my skin AND get a subtle glow.

Last week, we had the privilege of meeting CoverGirl Taylor Swift before her first Speak Now World Tour show in Newark, New Jersey. Taylor was one of the sweetest celebrities we’ve ever met, complimenting our outfits when we met her, giving big hugs, and jumping up with excitement when we recognized she was wearing her new fragrance, out in late fall. We found out that her vibrant red lip came courtesy of CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lipstick in Hot—”The brightest shade they have!” On her nails, she sported a creamy seafoam green shade, similar to Essie Nail Polish in Mint Candy Apple. Check out the photo of my sister, Taylor, and I above—the night was definitely a dream come true!

On the quest for the perfect mascara, we purchased new ones for over a decade, but no one really got it right—until CoverGirl launched LashBlast Fusion Volume + Length Mascara. The chubby wand gives us the lashes of our dreams: Super-long (people always ask if we have extensions), thick (it really magnifies every lash), and somehow clump-free, too. The formula doesn’t make it look like we’re wearing mascara, but like we were born with the longest, lushest fringe ever. Every mascara we’ve tested since—literally hundreds for our job—never measures up, and we’re always left longing for LashBlast. Have you found your perfect mascara?

The compacts, which come in Sensitive, Normal, and Oil Control formulas, are available now at food and drug retailers as long as supplies last, and in Walmart stores starting in June. Do good, look good!

Beauty trends come and go, but one seems to pop up over and over: purple eye shadow. Lilac lids were all the buzz on the beauty scene this summer, and have gracefully made their way into fall. Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Kate Hudson have all sported purple shades, and this is one celeb trend you’ll want to follow.
But before you go out and grab as many shadows as you can get your hands on, follow our guide to choosing the best hue for your skin tone.
Fair Skin: Pick shades with silver pigments and shimmery undertones to compliment your light complexion. For a daytime look, go with lilacs and other soft purples, like glimmer-flecked Youngblood Pressed Eyeshadow in Prism . For evening, CoverGirl Eye Enhancers Eye Shadow in Purple Pop lends a more dressed-up look.
Olive Skin: This is the category I fall into. To compliment my skin, I use matte shades that don’t clash with my olive tones. To really make my brown eyes pop, I like pastel purples, which also work great on green eyes! Some of my personal favorite shadows are Clinique Colour Surge Eye Shadow in Night Plum and M.A.C. Cosmetics Eye Shadow in Fig. 1.
Dark Skin: The combination of purple shadow and dark skin can be an intense one. It’s important to compliment that intensity by using deep plums that blend well with dark tones, or shimmery shades to contrast them. Try Revlon Luxurious Color Perle Eye Shadow in Lilac Shimmer for day, and Lancôme Sensational Effects Eye Shadow Smooth Hold in Trendy for a night out.
When wearing purple shadows, remember to keep the color below your eyelid crease. Pair your shadow with a sheer blush and a pinky-nude lip to complete the look (and keep all the attention on your eyes)!
