Most women—regardless of their shape or size—are susceptible to dreaded, dimply cellulite. In fact, 95% of women have it (yep, even skinny chicks), so it’s a universal issue. We recently turned to DERMADoctor founder and board certified dermatologist, Dr. Audrey Kunin, to find out about the latest breakthrough in cellulite treatment as well as her best tips for looking hotter than ever this summer.
Tell us about the unique technology behind DERMADoctor Shrinking Beauty.
“I was inspired by how lobsters lose weight. In order to shed their shells so they can get larger, they need to get skinny to wiggle free of their shell. But they don’t know how to eat less or go swim laps. So, they have the ability to make a hormone, which revs up their fat metabolism, and it physically squeezes those fat cells down. Like deflating a water balloon, all the filler-fat comes out of the fat cells, and I was really intrigued by that because one of the causes of cellulite is that the fat puffs up higher into the skin where it doesn’t belong because we lose the collagen barrier that keeps the fat where it should be. That happens because of female hormones, and it becomes more noticeable with the aging process as we lose collagen. So when you look at what’s out there on the market with cellulite products, they tend to be caffeine and water-based, which is just a temporary, fluid reducer and de-puffer. But, what we really need to do is get those fat cells to get smaller and go back where they belong. So Shrinking Beauty ($58, dermadoctor.com) targets both the fat cells as well as rebuilds that collagen barrier. I was able to replicate the hormone that lobsters make, so it’s shellfish free and I didn’t hurt any lobsters, but I basically replicated that hormone.” [I just started using this cream and after slathering it on for just a few days, I'm already seeing smoother skin so I am anxious to see the full results after one month.]
Besides a cream like Shrinking Beauty, what else can women do to look their best all summer?
“Anything that is going to help smooth out and hydrate certainly will give the appearance of firmer, more tone-looking skin. So use a scrub and an alpha-hydroxy acid based moisturizer. It’s going to make the skin look healthier, smoother and give the illusion that it’s in better shape than maybe it is. Pilates is actually an incredible way to help firm and tone the muscles and the skin, and it’s certainly something you want to consider adding into your exercise routine.”
If someone is really struggling with cellulite and feel like they’ve tried everything, what is the next step for them?
“Well, it’s part of the aging process, and you can’t stop aging, but you can slow it down; you can improve what damage has happened, but it’s an ongoing thing. So you do need to continue a regimen, whatever you’re doing that’s working. Or you could explore in-office treatment options, like a cool sculpting procedure that’s freezing the fat. So it’s almost a little lypo/tightening of the skin. You can try the endermologie, and I’m talking about in-office level endermologie, not someone massaging you with some sort of little roller-ball. Those are the two big things that can be done.”

Cellulite is no laughing matter—especially for those who have it, which is up to 90 percent of women, according to recent reports. And when it comes to the dimply, jiggly skin, it seems women will try just about anything to get rid of it (think: shrink wrap and crazy shapewear). But some of these makeshift solutions are so extreme, the only thing you can do is laugh at the lengths women go to in hopes of smoothing out the cellulite (hey, we all can relate). Beauty company Vichy is making light of the matter by introducing the Cellulite Confessions campaign with a funny mockumentary that highlights the nonsensical and just plain wacky treatments women attempt in their pursuit for smoother skin.
On a more serious note, Vichy wants to help you kick cellulite’s stubborn butt. And since most attempts seem to fail, the brand is taking a new, two-pronged approach. Vichy is kicking off the Cellulite Confessions campaign, so what are some of the craziest things you’ve heard from women trying to get rid of cellulite?
“It’s interesting because they come here [Equinox] to get rid of it so I think they would have way too much shame to tell me and confess to me what they’ve done otherwise. But they complain a lot about the areas where they have cellulite and I just tell them to make sure they’re consistent with their workouts, that they drink plenty of water, that they have a good diet as well, that they steer away from processed foods and eat more kinds of whole foods that will help them have body weight that is consistent with their height.”
So what are some of the best exercises that women can do to target those trouble zones?
“I think a combination of cardio and strength-training, especially strength-training. Women tend to steer towards cardio and they don’t do too much strength-training. One pound of muscle in your body actually burns 50 more calories during rest time. So to do strength-training as well as cardio, and not try to zone in too much on the target areas but a total body workout does the trick.”
How does your diet play a key role in helping the appearance of cellulite?
“I mean, even if you work out and you don’t eat well, it’s going to still be a problem. It’s part of the equation: you eat well and you exercise and you will see results. It just goes hand in hand. And you know, staying away from the sugar and saturated fats and anything that pretty much comes out of a box or a can and eating whole foods that are colorful and fruit and vegetables and protein, because protein builds muscle as well.”
What do you think the biggest misconceptions are about cellulite?
“That only fat people have it. Actually, according to the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, 85% of women post-puberty have cellulite. And cellulite is caused by genetics, or post-natal, or poor food habits, or lack of working out, smoking causes it as well. And all shapes and sizes actually have cellulite. It doesn’t matter; celebrities have it, short, tall, skinny. It’s just something women have to deal with throughout their life.”
What would be your best advice for women to feel confident in their own skin?
“You know, a combination of eating well and exercising. And exercising, you release these endorphins that give you a sense of well-being. It actually takes about five minutes for the anti-stress benefits of exercise to kick in. Five minutes! That’s pretty good. And when you exercise and you feel good about yourself, I think you put your best foot forward in anything that you do. As a mother, as a professional, as a daughter, I think you have the ability to deal with whatever the world is throwing at you because you’re taking care of your body and yourself first, then you’re able to take care of everything else and everyone else in your world.”
