What’s The Craziest Beauty Trend You’ve Tried?

Written on January 11, 2012 at 12:14 pm , by

Black lipstick, crimped hair, false lashes, the Snooki “pouf”: Most of us are guilty of taking beauty experimentation a little too far. We asked FITNESS staffers to spill the craziest trend or treatment they’ve tried:

“One of the DIY hair masks recommended in a beauty magazine that involved mashed banana and honey. The instructions didn’t mention that you had to mash the banana into a liquid, and I ended up with small pieces of banana in my hair. I had to shower and rinse about five times before it all came out—surely stripping away any of the conditioning power the mask was supposed to have!” —Karla Walsh, editorial assistant

“I’ve tried it all (lash extensions, neon eyeliner, nail patterns, a four-handed massage– you name it!), but recently I’ve been obsessed with tinting my brows. Giving extra definition to your brows by temporarily darkening them really makes a difference and helps to frame your face. I go to the Boom Boom Brow Bar or the Benefit Cosmetics Boutique in NYC.” — Eleanor Langston, beauty director

“A fish pedicure! My cousin’s spa offered the pedicures where you dip your feet in a tank with tiny garra rufa fish. It was ticklish and weird at first, but after a few minutes you got used to feeling the light bites. I think I’ll stick to regular pedicures, though.” —Marianne Magno, associate web editor

“Putting toothpaste on a pimple overnight as you sleep, and it’s supposed to disappear by morning! I have tried this and it actually worked. Unless it was just a fluke!” —Jenna Autuori-Dedić, fitness editor

“Bright, Jersey Shore-esque, press-on acrylic nails. They aren’t something I’d typically wear, but they’re fun for that week that they last.” —Grace Murney, photo intern

“Back in middle school, during the time when funky makeup brands like Urban Decay and Hard Candy had just launched, I thought it was a good idea to wear almost-black lipstick. Every single day. Definitely not the most flattering look on a 13-year-old— or anyone!” —April Franzino, associate beauty editor

Tried-It Tuesday: Your Perfect Purple

Written on October 19, 2010 at 7:25 am , by

Beauty trends come and go, but one seems to pop up over and over: purple eye shadow. Lilac lids were all the buzz on the beauty scene this summer, and have gracefully made their way into fall. Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Kate Hudson have all sported purple shades, and this is one celeb trend you’ll want to follow.

But before you go out and grab as many  shadows as you can get your hands on, follow our guide to choosing the best hue for your skin tone.

Fair Skin: Pick shades with silver pigments and shimmery undertones to compliment your light complexion. For a daytime look, go with lilacs and other soft purples, like glimmer-flecked  Youngblood Pressed Eyeshadow in Prism . For evening, CoverGirl Eye Enhancers Eye Shadow in Purple Pop lends a more dressed-up look.

Olive Skin: This is the category I fall into. To compliment my skin, I use matte shades that don’t clash with my olive tones. To really make my brown eyes pop, I like pastel purples, which also work great on green eyes! Some of my personal favorite shadows are Clinique Colour Surge Eye Shadow in Night Plum and M.A.C. Cosmetics Eye Shadow in Fig. 1.

Dark Skin: The combination of purple shadow and dark skin can be an intense one. It’s important to compliment that intensity by using deep plums that blend well with dark tones, or shimmery shades to contrast them. Try Revlon Luxurious Color Perle Eye Shadow in Lilac Shimmer for day, and Lancôme Sensational Effects Eye Shadow Smooth Hold in Trendy for a night out.

When wearing purple shadows, remember to keep the color below your eyelid crease. Pair your shadow with a sheer blush and a pinky-nude lip to complete the look (and keep all the attention on your eyes)!
