Artistry—the official cosmetics and skin care provider for the Miss America Pageant—recently introduced us to their star products, as well as, 2013 Miss America, Mallory Hytes Hagan. Here, the beautiful blonde gives us the lowdown on how she stays pageant-ready.
So, how does it feel to be Miss America?
“It’s kind of strange. I think the experience that I’m having is different from previous Miss Americas because I came back home [after the pageant]. This is what I was doing as Miss New York. To be back in New York doing it, it feels normal. So I’m sure I’ll feel it more as I travel the next couple of weeks. It’s a really big deal that I’ll be moving around so much. It’s awesome to know that for the rest of my life, I’m Miss America.”
How do you stay fit?
“I try to switch it up a lot. I worked with a California-based trainer named Sohee Lee, who wrote me a really wonderful training plan and I worked with a nutritionist, Richard Talens, who started Fitocracy, the online fitness app. I also worked with Mark Fisher Fitness here in the city, so I’ve gotten it from all angles. In order to keep it mixed up, I did SoulCycle, Bikram Yoga and Cross-Fit, just trying to keep myself motivated in any way that I could. Some weeks I would be like ‘I’m not going to the gym, I refuse,’ so I would go to Bikram Yoga and SoulCycle. I know it’s so hard for so many women to keep on top of it because life gets in the way. Find something that you enjoy doing this week, and hey, maybe next week is different.”
What does your diet entail?
“My meals consist mainly of chicken and broccoli. I tried to stick with a certain macronutrient range as I was getting prepared for Miss America. I had a lot of weight to lose, so on days when I was working out I would eat 120 grams of protein, no fat and 40 or 50 grams of carbs. On days when I wasn’t working out, I was having 150 grams of protein, 25 or less grams of fat, and no carbs. So it’s just maintaining those macronutrients when I’m working out and when I’m not, making sure that my body is functioning properly when I’m in the gym, and resting properly when I’m not as well.”
What is your go-to healthy snack?
“I’m really into eating celery and peanut butter—they call it ants on a log. It really hurt my feelings to leave off the raisins because they’re so high in sugar, but celery and peanut butter is a really big thing for me. I also love miso soup. Until I had to cut down on sodium, miso soup was a great option, and you can get it anywhere, which is great.”
Can you tell us your favorite diet tip?
“Order your sushi wrapped in cucumber—leave the brown rice off. It’s a great way to remove those calories and it still tastes delicious and fresh.”
We hear you want to get into the Cosmetic industry. How so?
“I’m studying advertising, marketing and communications at FIT, and they have a wonderful Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing bachelors program, so I have another semester in my associates and then hopefully, if I’m accepted into the program, I’ll be completing my degree in that.”
Tell us one beauty product that you could never compete without.
“Artistry’s Signature Eyes Automatic Liquid Liner ($20, amway.com). I’m in love with it. My eyelids are so oily, so I always end up with my eyeliner on the top of my eyelid from blinking. Their eyeliner doesn’t budge. It stays on all day long and wipes off really easily with makeup remover so it’s not tough to get off.”
How do you keep your skin clear?
“I really like the Artistry Essentials Balancing Skin Care System in the mini travel set ($19, amway.com). I have combination skin, so it’s really good to use a system like that’s going to target both my oily spots and my dry spots. It includes a cleanser, toner and moisturizer and it comes in a little travel pack, which is great because I can throw it in my carry on suitcase.
How do you maintain your glowy skin?
“I self-tan. It’s one of my biggest beauty secrets. I don’t think people realize how much more glowing you can look if you add just a little color to your skin—it doesn’t have to be a lot. My self-tanning secrets are to exfoliate, then moisturize. Tanning salons tell you not to moisturize; I say do it. Your tan won’t last as long but it will be more natural when it’s applied.”
Do you have any tips for exfoliating?
“I do the most traditional home remedy for exfoliating: sugar, salt and just a little bit of olive oil. I rub it on my feet, hands and knees.”
Who is your beauty icon?
“Charlize Theron is so beautiful and fresh and put together. She always looks phenomenal with no makeup, with just mascara, with a face full of makeup, with smoky eyes, everything. Whoever her stylists are, they should be commended.”

Model and philanthropist Petra Nemcova witnessed just how tragic natural disasters can be. After surviving a tsunami in Thailand in 2004, she returned to the region and was blown away by the mass destruction and devastation that resulted from the Indian Ocean earthquake. Unsatisfied with the response from other organizations, she set out to create her own non-profit, international charity, Happy Hearts Fund, to help improve children’s lives by building and rebuilding schools in areas affected by natural disasters. Now she is teaming up with Clinique to help spread smiles across the globe by introducing a limited edition fragrance, Happy Heart ($37, clinique.com), as well as a T-shirt with the message “Make Someone Happy,” ($16, clinique.com). $10 from the sale of each fragrance, and $5 from the sale of each shirt will go directly to Happy Hearts Fund. I chatted with Nemcova about the partnership and her insider fitness and beauty secrets.
Tell me about the Happy Hearts Partnership with Clinique.
“The partnership is a match made in heaven, for one, because Clinique is so focused on education. Their consultants are extremely educated, so they can teach their customers. Number two, their consultants are very passionate about education and children, and that is what we are the most passionate about, so it’s a perfect partnership. The philosophies of both brands are very much aligned, even with colors. And what I am excited about is that this partnership will be able to rebuild more schools and create many happy hearts in the lives of children, who have been forgotten after natural disasters.”
What’s your favorite thing about the fragrance?
“The smell is really uplifting. When I get a little down, or tired during the day, smelling it uplifts me. It has sweet notes of mandarin orange and floral notes of water lily, rose and geranium. It’s really a beautiful fresh light dance. And I love the packaging. It was done in a beautiful way where the hearts connect when you put them together. $10 of this fragrance goes to rebuilding schools and the lives of children, so it reminds you that your heart is connected to those children.”
We know you are constantly on the go for work. How do you stay on track while travelling?
“For me, the best way is to go to the gym and do a routine but I also love to go to Physique 57 a lot, so using some of their techniques while I’m traveling helps because you don’t need much and it’s incredibly effective.”
What are some of your insider beauty tips?
“I do actually have a new one: we have a tradition in the Czech Republic that we put honey on our faces during Christmas dinner to be beautiful on the inside for the next year. I went to get a facial last week and the facialist was fantastic. Without me telling her about the honey, she told me a trick which is incredible—put a little bit of water on your face and then cleanse your face with Manuka Honey 16+ ($36, soap.com) and it gives you an incredible glow. So it goes back to the tradition which has some truth in it because honey has lots of antioxidants in it. And I used to put honey on my skin when I was a teenager—I used to go and sleep with it on my face. It was a little bit messy. So this tip is less messy!”
What are some of your favorite beauty products?
“I absolutely love Clinique All About Eyes Serum ($28, clinique.com) which is an anti-puffing eye serum. It’s amazing. It’s so cooling, even just the cooling effect, it makes a huge difference. It’s one of those products that you get addicted to.”
I’ll admit it: I’m a self-declared lip balm addict. I need one in my purse at all times. Compiling the ultimate beauty-equipped gym bag can be tricky, especially if you exercise before work or during your lunch break. Here’s a roundup of products that keep my bag light while still meeting all of my beauty needs.
I wash my hair only a few times each week, but sometimes I’m left with no choice (like after Spinning). Bumble and bumble’s Be Color Minded Kit ($28, Sephora) is great for dire-wash situations since the 2-ounce shampoo, conditioner and styling balm are all free of sulfates and harsh chemicals that can dry out hair when used often. And for days when my hair needs a little pick-me-up, dry shampoo is my hero. I keep a mini can of Redken Powder Refresh 01 ($8, redken.com for salons) in my bag at all times. I love that it adds volume with leaving an annoying white residue.
If your gym’s locker room doesn’t provide a blow dryer, look for a lightweight folding one, such as the X5 Superlite Mini Nano Tourmaline & Ionic Dual Voltage Travel Dryer ($49.99, Folica.com). This packs a surprisingly powerful blast despite its small size.
Moisturizing after a shower is an absolute must (especially during the winter months), so I always make sure to keep mini bottles of body lotion on hand. Burt’s Bees Naturally Nourishing Milk & Honey Body Lotion costs only $1.99 (burtsbees.com) for the travel size and leaves skin super soft. It smells fresh, and its lightweight formula won’t leave your skin slick or sticky.
If you don’t want to bring your entire stash of makeup with you, invest in an interchangeable palette, like Bobbi Brown 3-Pan Palette ($10, Bobbibrown.com), which allows you to swap out blush and shadow colors according to your look that day. And, if you have any contact lens cases lying around, here’s a trick: fill one side with your favorite face cream and the other with foundation. This way, you don’t have to miss out on your must-haves in order to downsize.

Our Nutrition Editor, Juno DeMelo, loves the look of a shiny manicure but can never go more than a day without her polish chipping. “This is day four!” DeMelo bragged. “Granted, I asked my husband to be on dish duty this week, but still: This is the longest a manicure has ever lasted for me, and that’s counting salon ones. It’s also the glossiest looking one I’ve ever had. All this and I didn’t even use a base coat!” she said.
Troy Polamalu is known as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ fast and physical safety. But off the field, Troy’s a soft-spoken family man who makes setting a good example for his younger players and fans one of his top priorities. Recently, he hosted a Polynesian Luau Event to benefit the Harry Panos Fund of the Pittsburgh Foundation, which he set up with his wife, Theodora, in honor of her grandfather, a World War II veteran, and the Troy Polamalu Football Camp held in American Somoa each year. I got the chance to chat with the Polamalus while Troy got his curls touched up by Head & Shoulders Celebrity Stylist, Sunnie Brook Jones (Polamalu’s a spokesperson for the brand).
You are hosting the Luau tonight—tell me about the event and why it is so important to you.
“We’re having this event with two performances: Common Kings, an island reggae-style pop group and another reggae artist named Fiji who’s one of the most popular island reggae artists. I say ‘island’ in the sense of the Polynesian island. And then we’re going to have a performance by Netane, which is a Polynesian dance group out of Orlando, Florida and it’s going to be a real good time. At most events, players come and people pay to get autographs but in a lot of ways this event epitomizes our culture in that we’re hosting an event for everyone to have a really good time. Obviously, people have paid for tickets to get in, which is the great fundraising aspect of it, but as far as hosting it, there’s live music, two concerts, a live performance, all-you-can-eat food, and all-you-can-drink drinks. There’s just so many people who have donated so much and it’s really cool that when you have a passion for a certain cause, how willing people are to really fork out and help out.”
Head & Shoulders is a title sponsor of the event and you’ve been partnered with them for four years. What do you like most about working with the Head & Shoulders brand?
“Well, we have a great relationship. I grew up using Head & Shoulders, so it was really awesome to start the relationship four years ago and to be able to do the different commercials that we’ve done and to pair it with different things. We paired it first with a charity called Operation Once in a Lifetime, which our charity, the Harry Panos Fund for Veterans still has a close relationship with. Then we do things like the million dollar hair insurance policy, the wax figure and now we have the School of Deeper Learning. But it’s been an awesome relationship that we’ve had together. Our locker room is full of Head & Shoulders products!”
As a football player used to being on the field, is it difficult getting used to the beauty aspect of these things, like the hair and makeup?
“Like everything at first, it took some getting used to. For example: the acting—on our very first commercial they gave me five lines, very simple. I was like, ‘Oh yea, no problem, I got this.’ Then I get there, sit with another professional actor and there are 50 people behind the camera and I went blank. I was like, ‘Oh man!’ So I’m getting used to the acting; to the hair and makeup. The first time I ever did anything, they tried to put makeup on me and I was really offended! But you get used to these things.”
You were recently voted the most liked athlete in the NFL by fans, so what do you think makes you so appealing to your fans?
“My first reaction was, ‘I don’t even like myself!’ But I think when you get those types of comments, whether it’s on a personal basis or through media, I try to tell younger players and others that you never just represent yourself. You represent your wife, your children, your family, your culture, the people you were raised by, your faith, and you have to always be conscious of that rather than living egocentrically and doing what you want to do. So in a sense, I think all of it goes to the different circumstances and people that have helped me throughout my entire life.”
So, will you ever cut your hair?
“Um—no. Well, I haven’t cut it in years. Not even a trim; I never even trimmed it. I could probably use one, as I’ve been told several times. I haven’t cut it for 10 years, I think it’s going on 11 years, which is also when I met my wife so I haven’t cut it since I met her!”
Speaking of your wife: Theodora, I know you are a busy mom of two. How do you find time to fit in exercise?
“It’s all about balancing and prioritizing things correctly. Making sure the children are happy. My husband and my children always come first before anything else. And as long as their happy and they are getting everything that they need, then everything else just falls into place—they’re always my first priority.”
Do you and Troy ever work out together?
“We used to workout together before the children and he put me on a workout plan with his special gym equipment that he had made for him at our gym. I used to do that. But now, after the kids, I don’t really have time to go to the gym, so I just try to put them in a stroller or a double stroller and jog around the city.”
Besides jogging, are there any specific workouts you like to do when you can fit it in?
“I like Bikram yoga. I try to do that whenever I’m in California. I try to do it three times a week if I can. I do CrossFit; I love it. It’s so much fun. It’s an amazing workout. It works your core really well, which is great for women, especially if you have kids. The core sort of goes away so you really have to train those muscles hard to get back into shape and back into being strong again. After children, everything gets a little bit stretched out. And I love running. I was running like six miles a day as often as I could. If I can’t get the kids in the stroller to jog with them, then I’ll just go run around the park. Sometimes I run without them to help clear my head.”
What are the healthy snacks you like to prepare for your family?
“We do green juice. Green juice is a staple in our house. We juice everyday. The kids help me; they know all about it. I put fruit in their green juice to make it a little sweeter. But the green juice I drink generally doesn’t have any fruit at all so that’s our staple. Juicing is really fun. The kids get involved with it, then they get excited about what they make so they don’t mind drinking it even if it looks funny. We like to say that my kids are super heroes so green juice is ‘hulk juice’ for us. It’s really fun and a great way to get kids interested and active in participating in a healthy and balanced diet.”
The perfect eyeliner is hard to find. Kohl pencils can smudge easily and liquid—for those of us with a shaky hand—can result in looking like a hot mess. Shimmery Green Eyes: Update your typical smoky eyes with green shadow. Tip: Snag trendy colors (like green!) at the drugstore. Sweep a wash over your lids or rim your upper lash lines for a toned down version of the winged green shadow below.
Sheer Red Lips: Rushing from a workout to the office? Save time by swiping on a tinted red lip balm and keeping the rest of your face natural. You’ll look pulled together but by swapping a balm for the lipstick version, you won’t need a lip brush or a ton of mirror time.

Laila Ali has a reputation for being tough in the boxing ring, but lately she’s been showing off her softer side by promoting—wait for it—hair tools. Turns out, Ali actually has a beauty background. Before entering the boxing world, she owned a nail salon. She’s now the face of a new line of Gold N Hot hair styling tools (look for her in online how-to hair videos here!). Read on for my chat with Laila on hair and workout tricks.
What made you decide to work with Gold N Hot?
“I’ve been a fan of Gold N Hot for many years now and I have used their tools for a long time. It’s a highly recognized brand, especially in the African American community. I chose to work with them because I have first hand experience.”
What’s your favorite styling tool in the new line?
“My favorite is the flat iron. It’s a great tool because it straightens out your hair, flattens out frizz, and even curls your hair if you use it properly. To make sure you’re using it correctly, you can launch the how-to videos with your smart phones just by scanning the tags right off the box!”
Do you style your own hair or do you have a stylist?
“I do my own hair on regular days and I like to use my flat iron. If I could only have one styling tool in the world, it would be a flat iron. I just can’t live without it! But on days that I have an event or a shoot, I call my stylist.”
I’m sure you’ve used many blow dryers in the past, what makes yours different?
“The ion technology really makes a difference; it helps smooth down your hair in less time with less heat. It cuts time because you don’t have to keep going over and over it again. It’s really a good product for its price range.”
What do you use before and after you style your hair?
“I use a heat protectant spray before I use any heat styling tool—it protects and adds sheen. I like to use a light hairspray after using a curling iron to help hold my curls.”
How do you keep your hair looking good after a tough workout?
“I try to workout by a fan to keep my hair from getting sweaty. I use a cap instead of a headband and I go back around my edges (hairline around the face) with a flat iron when I get home.”
What’s your favorite on-the-go easy hairstyle?
“I’m a ponytail girl.”
What’s your favorite beauty product?
“Tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier: it’s lightweight, protects me from the sun, evens out my skin, and gives me a natural looking finish.”
In the battle between chapstick vs lipstick, who wins?
What’s your favorite healthy snack?
“Non-fat Greek yogurt, apples, almonds, dry fruit like apricots, and fresh baby carrots with low fat French onion dip.”
Do you have any quick fitness tips?
“Try to stay consistent. Workout first thing in the morning, this way you get it done and out of the way. Make short term and long term goals, and don’t beat yourself up if you miss a workout.”
What is your favorite spa treatment after a long day of training?
“A nice massage. I always ask for an extra half hour on my feet.”

For as long as I can remember, I’ve secretly obsessed over my teeth. I had braces when I was younger and as a result, my smile looked beautiful for a few years. But then I had my wisdom teeth removed and kept forgetting to wear my retainers (is there anything less sexy than a retainer?) and the next thing I knew, I was spending an unacceptable amount of time stressing over my crowded teeth. Once I started expressing my concern to friends and colleagues, I found out that I wasn’t the only one unhappy with my smile.
I researched options but knew that a second round of traditional braces was not right for me. Now that I was older with a career and an active social life, I felt embarrassed by the prospect of having braces again. But then I discovered Incognito Hidden Braces. I met with Dr. Schulhof of The Schulhof Center for Cosmetic Orthodontics and he explained to me how Incognito braces are just like the traditional version, but they are placed behind your teeth, making them invisible to others.
