We usually stick to solid polish on our nails, but these funky new trends may inspire us to expand our horizons:
This twist on the classic French manicure has been hot since it appeared on the runway at numerous shows this spring, and the likes of fashion risk-takers such as Rihanna and Lady Gaga have been seen wearing it.
When we saw this outside-the-box nail trend, we couldn’t help think of a little spring ladybug (admit it – you see it too!) The flirty and feminine split nail is a fresh way to wear your favorite spring hues. While this, and the half moon above, are styles better left to nail technicians, we think the split nail is definitely worth a salon splurge.
A matte finish is a cool switch from the traditionally glossy nail. A product like Butter London’s Matte Finish gives any polish a matte look in one coat.
We usually try to avoid chipping our polish, but the new crackle lacquers actually add a textured, chipped look to nails. We’d layer a crackle top coat like OPI Black Shatter over our regular hue for a fun night out with friends. Which of these nail trends will you try?

It’s the time of year to make resolutions, and beauty is no exception! Ours: To be less lazy with our hair. We usually just wash and go, but want to try more styling techniques this year to mix things up. What are your beauty resolutions for 2011?
Celebrity makeup artist Zena Shteysel has had her fair share of experience in the beauty industry: Her skills have been featured in print campaigns, several feature films, and some of Hollywood’s most-watched TV shows, including Dancing with the Stars (see her in action at right), where she earned an Emmy award for her work beautifying contestants such as Kelly Osbourne and Laila Ali. Zena gave FITNESS some on-the-go advice, as well as a peak inside her makeup bag:
FITNESS: You must be so busy traveling to make up your celebrity clients. What are your best on-the-go beauty tips?
Zena Shteysel: My favorite products for on-the-go are those that make me look awake and fresh quickly. For me these include a brightening concealer for under the eyes, a champagne shimmer eye shadow on the lid, mascara, blush and a lip gloss in a pink color.
FITNESS: If you had to clean out your entire makeup supply and keep five items, what would they be?
ZS: Brow pencil or powder, concealer, mascara, blush and lip gloss.
FITNESS: Do you have any weird beauty tricks you swear by?
ZS: My favorite beauty trick is lining the inside top lash line with black eyeliner to intensify the eye without looking like you did anything.
FITNESS: What’s the most important thing to keep in mind when trying to achieve a flawless complexion?
ZS: To achieve a flawless complexion the most important thing is to take care of the skin. Make sure to cleanse the skin before bed and use sunscreen during the day.

This past month I decided it was time for a change, and my mane was the target. I didn’t want to do anything drastic, so I took the advice of my stylist and traded in my flat iron for a blow dryer and round brush. My hair is now injected with bounce and volume—a look I would have never been able to achieve otherwise.
Here’s how to achieve your own perfect blowout:
1) Always start with heat protectant! This is key for preventing heat damage and maintaining shine. Try one that repairs as it protects, like Matrix Biolage Thermal Active Repair Gloss, for double the benefit. To add volume, Pantene Celebrity Stylist Danilo also suggests using a spray gel, like the Pantene Fine Heat Protection & Shine Spray.
2) Part damp hair into even sections and pin up with plastic clips. The smaller the section, the faster and more easily you’ll finish the blowdry.
3) Starting with the bottom layers, grip the round brush in your right hand and place at the root of your first section, with hair falling on top of it. Choose a brush with boar bristles, which distribute hair’s natural oils and maximize shine. A wide ceramic barrel is ideal for adding volume and holding heat longer to shorten drying time.
4) Place the blow dryer (on high) directly above the strands and slowly move the brush downward through the length of the hair, repeating until dry. When you reach the ends, twirl the brush around the hair for a couple of seconds to add dimension and give that “I just stepped out of a salon” appearance. Don’t keep the heat in one spot, Danilo warns: “This can bake your strands and cause stress on the hair, leaving it fried. Evenly distribute heat throughout the hair when blow drying.”
5) Repeat step 4 until the entire head is complete and looking fabulous! Remember to move slowly and take your time. Practice really does make perfect, especially when attempting a blowout!
6) Finish with a small amount of glossing serum, such as Organix Nourishing Milk Anti-Breakage Serum.
Follow these steps and you’ll be on the road to bouncy hair in no time! What are you best at-home blowout tricks?

It’s no secret that eating a healthy, balanced diet helps your waistline, but did you know it can also affect your appearance? A healthy diet, full of vitamins and minerals, can help combat aging, make your skin glow and even help your hair grow stronger.
Wrinkles: Retinoids are a form of vitamin C, which is a known wrinkle reducer. They work by helping your body naturally produce more collagen, and more collagen means less wrinkles. A few foods high in vitamin C are strawberries, oranges and red peppers.
Glowing Skin: If you check the label of skin vitamins, the main ingredient will always be vitamin E, and for good reason. Vitamin E, an antioxidant, and has been shown to help combat acne, level skin tone and even fight against cellulite. The best sources for vitamin E are avocados and sunflower seeds.
Healthy Hair: Omega-3 fatty acids are a high-quality source of protein packed with vitamin B-12 and iron. A diet deficient in omega-3 can lead to a dry scalp, making hair dull and lifeless. Hair is also made of protein, which makes getting enough protein in your diet necessary for strong hair. Salmon is great source of omega-3 fats—and for all you vegetarians out there extra virgin olive oil is packed with it, too.
