Favorite Find Friday: My Recipe for Glowy Skin

Written on September 12, 2014 at 9:00 am , by

I mean this in the most humble way possible, but I am constantly asked about what I use on my skin to make it look so “amazing.” To be quite honest, I am always surprised by these inquiries because, like many of us, I’ve struggled with acne for years and am pretty critical of my skin, always wishing it was just a little more perfect, less blemished, more even, with fewer fine lines. Maybe that’s just a byproduct of working in the beauty biz or some leftover insecurity from my teen years, but the best thing about beauty is that it can help you love the skin you’re in. So when a friend of mine recently demanded to know what I put on my face, I gave her (and now you) the full run down. Below, my favorites for pretty, radiant skin:

Beauty Rx Progressive Peel ($70, beautyrx.com)
This at-home glycolic peel sloughs away all of the icky, dead skin that makes your skin look dull. The system includes three glycolic products: an 8% serum, 10% pads and a 15% cream so you can increase the strength over time without causing irritation. I’ve been using this for a few weeks now and it’s been doing wonders for my skin and minimizing breakouts.

Lancôme Teint Miracle Lit-From-Within Makeup ($43, lancome-usa.com)
I started using this glowy foundation years ago after discovering it was a must-have for makeup artists on set and never went back. It’s seriously like a candle light filter in a bottle. The teeny tiny pearl particles (they’re subtle, not shimmery) give your skin a soft radiance.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte Waterproof Bronzer in Park Ave. Princess ($30, tartecosmetics.com)
It seems counterintuitive if you want luminous skin, but I opt for a matte bronzer over a sparkling one for the most natural-looking results. The rich brown color gives you a healthy, sun-kissed look. Plus, the longwear formula stays put all day.

Bobbi Brown Blush in Peony ($27, bobbibrowncosmetics.com)
For me, the finishing touch is always a little pop of pink on the apples of my cheeks. This shades flatters most skin tones and gives you a pretty flush.

Nail Art Inspiration: My Rapha Cycling Cap

Written on September 9, 2014 at 2:58 pm , by

One of the best things about nail art is that you can draw inspiration from anywhere. With a little bit of polish and some creativity, the possibilities are endless.  Since getting into cycling, I’ve realized that nail art is big among female riders. It’s one of the few beauty moves that’ll last through a long ride. (Well, that and waterproof mascara, of course.) Plus, it looks super cute peeking out of your fingerless gloves. So when I decided to head to my first Rapha Cycle Club Women’s Ride, I grabbed my Tempest cap, designed for the Rapha Tempest Festival in England this past July, and settled in to create some mini masterpieces on my tips to match it. Here, I outlined the step-by-step instructions:

1. Apply two coats of a navy polish to all but one nail on each hand (for a list of the exact polishes I used, see below).
2. Paint the remaining nail on each hand a bright red shade. I let the base colors dry and waited a few hours to ensure the polish was completely hardened before starting the design.
3. Working with one color at a time, use the Striping Brush from the Butter London Backstage Basics Nail Art Tool Kit to paint a sideways V on each nail.
4. After, clean the brush with nail polish remover, pat dry and repeat with the remaining colors.
5. Using the same clean Striping Brush and the first navy polish, draw a Rapha “R” on your red nail and let dry.
6. Finish with one layer of a fast dry clear top coat to add shine and lock your design in place.

Kerri Walsh Jennings Shares her Sweet Skincare Secret

Written on September 3, 2014 at 2:24 pm , by

When beach volleyball star Kerri Walsh Jennings isn’t celebrating her recent winning streak (she has three Olympic golds under her belt!), showing off her killer six-pack or strutting down the ESPYs’ red carpet, the busy mom of three is taking good care of her skin. Jennings keeps it radiant for every occasion with a surprising ingredient that also helps her train—honey. She stashes the golden nectar in her gym bag as a source of natural energy during workouts and in her bathroom to use on her skin. Here, Jennings serves up her best skin and workout secrets.

You spend a lot of time outdoors for your job, which can be hard on your skin. What is your skincare regimen like?
“I’m in the sun all the time; I live in Los Angeles, so I accrued a lot of environmental damage and I’ve become aware of what the environment does to my body and my skin. Honey has become a key ingredient for my skincare routine. I was just saying that I had a really long, hot tournament; I had the Manhattan Beach Open for the AVP Tour. It’s the most prestigious tour and I won, which I’m so grateful for. But I left there feeling like I had aged 10 years because I was in the sun so much. I wear my visor; I’m in the shade as much as possible but still, the sun is persistent. So I literally could not wait to get home when the tournament was over to do my honey and oatmeal face mask. [Recipe: Grind 1tbsp. oatmeal into powder in a food processor. In a small bowl, mix with 2 tsp. of honey and ¾ tsp. of distilled water until a thick paste is formed. Apply mask and let sit for 20 minutes then rinse.] It replenishes the moisture and makes me feel awesome. I do that at least once a week, especially after I’m in the sun all day. Then, I’ve come to rely on my skin coach with Skin Authority. I partnered with them for the last few years. I have a skin coach who educates me on what I should be putting on my face, why and which product is for what. They have a Resurfacing Accelerator ($50, skinauthority.com), which is my favorite product of theirs aside from their SPF that I obviously live in. It helps rejuvenate new, fresh skin cells and gets rid of the dead skin. It’s something that I love and I feel that every woman regardless of age would appreciate. Obviously, hydration is also a really big issue. I know the importance of hydration as an athlete for sure, but I think it’s so easy to take for granted when you’re living your normal life as a woman. I’ve really tried to make sure that I’m well hydrated. It has absolutely made a difference.”

You spend hours competing and practicing in the sun. What’s your sun protection game plan?
“I apply all my sunscreen before I leave the house. I get out of the shower and I put it on so I know I am covering all the areas. If I get to the beach and I’m distracted, I’ll inevitably miss a spot and have a big red mark somewhere. On my face, I go from the outside in, because a lot of times people miss their hairline or their ears because they are only applying it from the center out. So this helps to make sure I’m very covered there. I wear big, Oakley sunglasses, not only to protect my eyes from the sun but to also protect the sensitive, delicate area around my eyes. I stay in the shade as much as possible. I have an SPF sarong that I put on to cover my chest. I love the sun, I love the benefits of it but it definitely takes a toll, so I love to be in the shade and wear pieces of clothing that will cover up and help me stay sun smart.”

What level of SPF do you wear?
“A minimum of 30 when I’m out there competing. The higher the better for me, for peace of mind. But people think they can apply sunscreen once and survive the day but re-applying is such a big part of it. The amount that you’re really supposed to use per application is pretty significant. Most people only use a quarter size to cover their whole body and for me, more is more with regards to sunscreen. Put it on, reapply, and be smart about it.”

What’s the best sweat-proof sunscreen out there?
Skin Authority Sunscreen Moisturizer SPF 30 ($42, skinauthority.com) is what I use when I’m competing and it doesn’t run in my eyes. It’s a beautiful sunscreen and it goes on really smooth and won’t run. Which is a good thing because if it runs in my eyes I can’t see the ball!”

So we’re totally envious of your abs! How do you keep your core so ripped?
“I think it’s a function of my job! If I don’t have a strong core then I’m in trouble. I do a lot of Pilates and I did it before, during and after pregnancy. I do it twice a week, as much as possible. If you can get in the Pilates studio and become aware of your core and learn how to actually use it, it’ll give you a healthier spine, which gives you a healthier body. I think a lot of people, when they work out, tend to push out their abs and contract them, when in reality you’re supposed to pull your belly button to your spine and do the movements. I think people are working really hard but doing it a little bit off, and Pilates taught me to do things right.”

Besides Pilates, do you have any other favorite workouts?
“I love to lift weights. I like being toned and I like the fact that the more muscle mass I have, the more my body is going to be more efficient at burning calories. I love that aspect of weight lifting. I don’t lift very heavy weights; I lift for my job and for my body type. But it makes me feel confident when I have muscle on my body so that’s something I love. I really love keeping a variety in my workouts. I have fun trainers who keep my body guessing. They’ll take me to the track one day, to the beach another, on hikes and stuff like that. I think variety is really important. And it’s important to keep your body guessing and I’m really lucky that the people I trust so much are really adventurous.”

Favorite Find Friday: Paintbox Manicure

Written on August 8, 2014 at 9:00 am , by

This past Sunday, I competed in the New York City Triathlon (you can read all about it here) and though the race itself was awesome, it required a ton of preparation leading up to it. Aside from the weeks of training, I had to make sure I had all the right gear (because let’s be honest—when you look the part, you feel more confident). So in the final weeks, I grabbed some race day essentials: a Zoot wetsuit and Speedo goggles for the swim in the Hudson river, a Timex water-resistant watch to keep tabs on my pace, a cute and colorful Specialized #aeroiseverything tri kit for the bike and run legs, a bag of my favorite all-natural hydration mix from Skratch Labs along with four water bottles (I’m a salty sweater!) and—my favorite accessory of my race day look—a Paintbox gel manicure to match my kit! I know, I know, you don’t necessarily need a fresh mani before a big race but I’ve made it a personal tradition because it helps calm my nerves. I went to the high-design nail art studio here in New York City with some friends on a day I was feeling really anxious about the race. Doing something fun and pampering was just what I needed to get my mind off any triathlon-related worries. I opted for gel so it would stay intact through swimming, biking and running, and I brought a picture of my kit so the manicurist could match the colors. My friends and I nicknamed the design my “racing stripes” and honestly, it really pumped me up for the big day. I got a ton of compliments from a few girls in transition so it helped me make some friends, too (always a plus when you’re racing solo!). Just like an amazing hair day can give you the confidence to crush a job interview or land a hot date, a cool nail design can actually give you that little extra boost for a big athletic event. So next time you sign up for one, go ahead and treat yourself!

Favorite Find Friday: SwimSpray

Written on July 18, 2014 at 2:51 pm , by

The past few weeks, I’ve been training for the New York City Triathlon, which means a lot more time spent in the pool than I’m used to. And though training has reminded me that swimming is one of the best total body workouts, it’s also pretty tough on your hair and skin. Not only am I extra dry, I’ve been walking around smelling like a pool all day—ick. So I tested out SwimSpray ($15, swimspray.com), an 100% natural vitamin C spray that neutralizes the odor of chlorine on your hair, skin and suit. After swimming, simply rinse off, spritz the solution on the chlorine-smelling areas (I spray it in my hair and over my skin before jumping in the shower and on my bathing suit before washing it) and then shampoo or wash as usual. Since the formula is all natural (made up of just vitamin C and water) it’s great for kids and the convenient spray bottle packaging allows you to spritz the little ones even when they’re squirming all over in their suits. I would thank the makers for helping me deal with that unmistakable chlorine stank, but honestly—I think my cube neighbors are more grateful!

Big News for Breakouts: Dial Launches New Acne-Fighting Line

Written on July 15, 2014 at 9:25 am , by

We all know Dial as a classic hand soap brand, accompanying sinks for years. Personally, we love their body washes and lotions (like the Frozen Yogurt Body Wash and 7-Day Moisturizing Lotion), but now—they’re breaking into the acne business with three new products clinically proven to give you clearer-looking skin in just three days. The new Acne Control line features a dermatologist-developed formula with two-percent salicylic acid, which helps slough away excess oil and dead skin to prevent breakouts. It’s available in three forms: a face wash, body wash and body and face bar, so whether you’re seeing pimples pop up on your face or struggling with bacne, there’s an option for you. The best part–everything is under $7 and available at mass retailers so you can get your hands on it (and get clearer skin) fast! We’re going to toss one in our gym bag to help prevent breakouts from tough sweat-sessions at the gym!

Favorite Find Friday: Band-Aid Our Veteran Heroes

Written on July 4, 2014 at 9:00 am , by

Independence day is a once-a-year opportunity to celebrate our freedom and enjoy time spent with family and friends. But we would never have that freedom if it weren’t for the brave men and women who serve in our military. When this holiday rolls around, I’m always looking for ways to sport some red, white and blue and I was excited when the Band-Aid Our Veteran Heroes Adhesive Bandages ($3, drugstore.com) came across my desk. These fun band-aids feature patriotic stars and stripes and military-inspired designs like camo (so fun for kids!). But the best part is: Band-Aid is partnering with Team Red, White & Blue, an organization that helps enrich the lives of American’s veterans by connecting them to their communities through physical and social activities and will donate 5% of the purchase price to a charity supporting vets. When you pick up a box of these, you can feel good knowing you’re contributing to a great cause.  So for any scratch, scrape or cut that happens over this holiday weekend, slap on one of these to show your support and have a safe July 4th!

Download This: A New App Lets You Try On Makeup Before You Buy!

Written on July 2, 2014 at 1:51 pm , by

Bold lip and eye looks can intimidate even us makeup junkies. How do you know if that fuchsia lipstick you saw your coworker applying in the bathroom will look as chic on you? L’Oréal Paris is finally putting an end to the makeup-purchasing guessing game! Introducing the first-ever virtual makeup tester app Makeup Genius (available to download for free here). This app allows you to test out L’Oréal Paris products before you buy them and experiment with full-faced beauty looks you’ve been dying to try. Makeup Genius transforms your smartphone’s front-facing camera into a virtual mirror that allows you to see what the products would look like on. But this is not like the virtual makeup tools of the past where things look wonky and don’t quite line up. This is a first-of-its-kind augmented reality tool that captures head movements, tracks facial points and examines skin texture for exact feature display in order to get a perfectly accurate read of your face. (Honestly, you have to see it to believe it!) The steps are simple: just scan your face, choose a product or a look offered in the catalogue (you can scan L’Oréal products while at the store, too!) and begin testing out your personalized makeup look. I was able to sit on my couch in sweats and try on dozens of lipsticks, eye shadow palettes and foundations without having to venture into the overwhelming beauty aisles at the drugstore or the somewhat terrifying makeup counters for some new finds. Amazingly, all of the makeup applied virtually moved with my face, in real time as if it had been expertly applied and I was looking in a mirror. I was able see how the colors looked with various facial expressions and in different lighting. After finding a look you love, you can buy your desired product directly through the app, making your beauty shopping hassle-free. So for all you crazy busy beauty addicts out there, your new look can now be tried, tested and purchased all from the comfort of your couch! Now that’s genius!

Check out these fun pics of me playing with the app:

Favorite Find Friday: St. Tropez Gradual Tan Everyday Body Lotion

Written on June 20, 2014 at 9:00 am , by

Anyone who knows me, knows I am a huge fan of St. Tropez self-tanning products. This obsession started at a young age when I read about the amazing bronz-ability of their self-tanner in a magazine and begged my mom to buy me a starter kit on eBay (!). Ever since, I’ve been hooked. Their spray tan formula is one of the best, drying in just 60 seconds! (You can find salons that use it here). I often turn to the Self-Tan Bronzing Mousse ($32, ulta.com) for weddings. It’s so easy to apply and the color develops into a rich brown tone, never orange. But lately, I’ve fallen in love with the St. Tropez Gradual Tan Everyday Body Lotion ($30, ulta.com). Usually, I apply this after I shower to give my naturally pale skin a healthy glow all summer. But I also use it to prolong the results of a spray tan. I usually get sprayed before a beach vacation but after several days of swimming, showering and shaving, my color starts to fade and I don’t want to bother with a full self-tanning routine (I’m on vacation, after all!). So I stash this in my bag and apply it everyday as my body lotion. Not only does it keep my color looking fresh and my skin radiant, it also hydrates for a baby soft feel. Forget the bronze, that’s gold medal level to me!

Favorite Find Friday: Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Beauty Balm SPF 25 PA++

Written on June 13, 2014 at 9:00 am , by

I’ve been upfront about my love affair with full-coverage foundations and powders on the blog (see: here and here), so when the BB cream craze blew up, I really wasn’t that interested. BBs, which stand for beauty balms, are like a one-step, does-it-all miracle worker for your skin. While offering universally flattering sheer coverage and SPF protection, most also boast hydration, antioxidants and anti-aging ingredients. This all sounds amazing, except for the fact that they lack the full-coverage I prefer. I never found one I could make an exception for until I tried Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Beauty Balm SPF 25 PA++ ($34, sephora.com). It’s like a huge glass of H2O for your skin in a tube. The moisturizing formula has a unique water bead technology that hydrates and maintains healthy moisture levels throughout the day, resulting in a dewy, fresh look. People have actually been asking me what I’m using on my skin! It glides on smooth (you can literally just swipe it on with your fingers!) and has SPF 25 for added protection from the sun. The coverage is sheer but I use it on the weekends when I just want to even out my complexion without piling on makeup. It’s made up of 50 percent water and actually has a cooling effect when applied so it’s great for neutralizing redness after a workout. I’m hooked!
