Though summer is probably when you’re most diligent when it comes to applying sunscreen, pro tennis beauty Maria Sharapova and suncare brand, Supergoop!, want you to think of SPF as an everyday essential—despite the season. Here, Sharapova’s secrets on staying safe in the sunshine.
Tell us why you partnered with Supergoop.
“As an avid user of Supergoop! daily for a number of years, I was drawn to not only the quality of the product but also the opportunity to educate people around the world about the importance of practicing safe sun habits everyday. I love that Supergoop! began for the sole purpose of sun protection, as opposed to other brands that just add suncare to existing beauty products due to trends. Supergoop! is not just another brand endorsement; I truly believe in the products and everything the brand stands for.”
As a tennis player, you compete and practice outdoors a lot. How important is suncare?
“Suncare is essential to me. My mom always told me that I should start thinking about anti-aging at a young age. Suncare became a habit from an early age because I wanted to make sure that I always kept my skin looking youthful. Being out in the sun so much, it is crucial that I protect my skin—both from an anti-aging perspective and as a preventative measure against skin cancer. If only everyone realized how important quality SPF protection is not only when outdoors, but also indoors.”
How do you find a formula that won’t melt down with sweat, sting your eyes or give you a slippery grip on your racket?
“The Supergoop! products are non-greasy. On match days, I always wear the Every Day Sunscreen ($19, supergoop.com) because it is so lightweight that I don’t feel like I am wearing anything, but my skin is always super-protected. The formula is good for sensitive skin and eyes.”
How are you and Supergoop! working together to spread the word on the importance of sun protection?
“Supergoop! and I will challenge consumers to think past ‘sunscreen’ and seasonal use of sun protection and instead, see it as an essential start to a healthy lifestyle— just like diet and exercise. I incorporate sun protection into my daily beauty routine and I make sure I am covered at all times. With this relationship, we have a lot of exciting plans coming up to help get the word out on how important it is to incorporate sunscreen into your beauty routine every single day.”
Besides sunscreen, what are your other beauty must-haves before practicing or a match?
“I don’t wear any makeup on the court, but I always make sure I have my Nike visor on as an extra sun blocker. This helps as an extra skin-protector.”

Barbeques, beach weekends and outside workouts—summer is finally here! With all of the bliss associated with the gorgeous weather, it’s easy to slack on your suncare game. But don’t, since the sun’s harsh rays can accelerate aging (think brown spots and fine lines) as well as cause skin cancer. So load up on your favorite SPF—30 plus, please (checkout some of our favorite brands: SkinCeuticals, La Roche-Posay, L’Oréal Paris, Banana Boat, SunBum, Neutrogena, Aveeno, Supergoop!—the list goes on). The latest formulas are so light and yummy, there’s no excuse not to slather yourself in them from head-to-toe. Pick out a cute wide-brimmed hat for beach days (and rock an old school baseball cap when running for extra protection) and treat yourself to a pair of UV-blocking sunnies. See, sun protection can be fun, right? Equally important, pop into your derm’s office to get a skin cancer screening once a year—it’s quick and painless. Don’t have a derm? No problem. You can utilize this awesome program The Skin Cancer Foundation’s “Road to Healthy Skin Tour” presented by Rite Aid. This potentially life-saving RV stops in 53 communities around the country and offers free full-body skin cancer screenings by local dermatologists who volunteer their time. Remember: Skin cancer is the most common, yet the most easily treated form of cancer, so it’s essential for you and your loved ones to get screened. To find a stop near you, click here. Have a happy (sun smart!) summer!

Full disclosure: I fall off the clean-eating wagon when I travel. Between the lack of healthy options at the airport, food chains and room service (eek) plus my mental shift to the “I’m on vacation!” mind-set, I go from feeling great pre-trip to indulging and bloating up after just one day. And when it comes to keeping up with my daily sweat sessions, I always feel torn when I’m at the gym in the middle of paradise. I feel like I should be exploring, sightseeing or relaxing. The pressure of trying to maintain my good habits when I’m out of my typical environment ends up stressing me out, which is the exact opposite of what a vacation should do. Recently, I stumbled upon a stress-free solution: a vacay that supports a healthy and active lifestyle without missing the fun that goes along with getting away on a Celebrity Cruise.
I recently took one of the company’s Reflection cruises to the Caribbean (tough job, I know). I had never been on a cruise ship before so I had no idea what to expect, but I was impressed. A Celebrity Cruise is a fit girl’s dream. There are several different packages available but their AquaClass caters to a healthy lifestyle. Here, the highlights:
I assumed the rooms would be tiny with bunk beds. I blame it on watching Titanic too many times. But the spacious room—301 square feet—was almost the size of my entire New York City apartment and it included a 79-square foot veranda, perfect for getting fresh air and admiring the breathtaking views. It was exactly like a room in a luxury hotel. In fact, there were times I forgot I was on a ship! The AquaClass staterooms offer spa elements to help you relax, feel comfortable and stay focused on your goals.
In AquaClass, you get exclusive access to and priority seating at the specialty restaurant, Blu, which features “clean cuisine” (inspired by light dishes of the Mediterranean which change nightly) and complimentary breakfast each day. You also get a daily delivery of ice, bottled water, tea and fruit. Plus, like other guests, you have access to the main buffet. Now—buffets can sometimes be a nightmare, but this one had many healthy (not to mention yummy!) options.
No matter which class you are in, every guest gets access to the fitness center on board. This is essential for days when you are at sea. I went everyday and loved it! Instead of being stuck in a basement gym, the 12th story gym featured cardio machines facing floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked expansive and gorgeous views of the endless ocean and each port. This makes a “dreadmill” workout a whole lot less dreadful. Once docked, you also have the option (for a small additional cost) of touring certain destinations through different shore excursions. These vary from mild to strenuous effort and include fun activities like walking tours, snorkeling and swimming, bike adventures and zip lining. These activities offer ways to get in some fitness and enjoy your destination at the same time.
As an AquaClass benefit, you receive a personal spa concierge to arrange spa treatments. Celebrity Cruises feature Canyon Ranch Spa Club, one of the world’s leading health and wellness brands, on 10 of their ships. Because I worked out everyday, I booked a massage (bonus: they were offering a discounted price during my stay!) to help ease muscle soreness. When I tell you this massage changed my life, I am not exaggerating. It was amazing! In addition, you get unlimited, complimentary access to the Persian Gardens, which is a relaxation room on board so you can chill out whenever you’d like. If your goal is to get healthier on the trip, you can also opt for various fitness-related services including a basic fitness assessment, an exercise prescription or an exercise program for weight loss for a small additional cost.
Bottom line: This was the first trip I’ve ever went on where I came back feeling lighter, fitter and healthier than before I left. So if you’re someone looking for a way to stay focused on your fitness while enjoying an amazing vacay, this getaway is for you. For more info., head to the Celebrity Cruises website here. In real life, Connie Britton is a little different from her Nashville character, Rayna Jaymes—mainly that she’s not a country singer with a drama-packed personal life. But when it comes to beauty, both women have the same MO: glowing skin and to-die-for hair. (Who hasn’t tried to replicate those waves?) We recently chatted with Britton to find out her beauty tricks (spoiler: her go-to skincare product is a classic). Bonus: she let us in on what’s coming up in the last two episodes of Nashville. Tune in tonight, May 7th at 10pm on ABC to find out and click below to watch our interview!
