Do you love products from L’Oréal Professional, Redken, Matrix, and Shu Uemura, and enjoy getting your hair done, but dread footing the bill? Well, then, being a hair model, might be the right gig for you. The style team at L’Oréal Professional Product Academy is looking for women (and men) of all ethnicities and ages to test hair color, hair care products, styling products, relaxers, and other hair treatments.
What’s in it for you: Models receive a free salon service, a gift bag loaded with hair products, and a complimentary pass to the private L’Oréal Employee Company Store where you can buy beauty products (including makeup, fragrance, hair and skin products) at 75 percent off.
All of the hairstylists are licensed professionals with years of industry experience, and during your consultation, you get to choose what hairstyle and/or treatment you want, plus get expert suggestions based on your features.
To book an appointment or for more information, contact Ashley McGinnis at 917.606.9563 or send an email to email@example.com.
You can also come in for a 15-minute evaluation at the L’Oréal testing center located at 435 Hudson Street in the West Village. Evaluations are held Tuesday through Friday from 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm. Here’s to happy hair days!
Olympic gold medalists’ Gabby Douglas (16) and Jordyn Wieber (17) are obviously amazing athletes but they also know a thing about beauty. Case in point: They each did their own hair and makeup at the Olympics. Impressive, right? I sat down with them to learn about their favorite products, their beauty icon (they share the same one!), and their intense training.
You two have been going non-stop since returning from London. Have you had any free time?
JW: “We’ve been having so much fun! Yesterday we had some free time and went shopping!”
GD: “And tonight, we each get to fly home!”
Ooh, shopping! What are some of your favorite stores?
JW: “I like Forever 21 and yesterday I went into this store called C. Wonder, and it was really cool.”
GD: “I like Topshop and BCBG.”
So you two are just like regular teenager girls?
GD: “Yes! We hang out with our friends and talk about boy crushes.”
You might not think professional male athletes spend a ton of time on their hair but Yankees’ right fielder Nick Swisher (yes, he’s as charming as you hoped) will make you think again. The baseball superstar is one of the faces of Head & Shoulders and rightfully so: Swisher’s known for mixing up his hairstyle. For more on “Swish,” his hair, and his guilty pleasure, read on.
Let’s talk about your hair. You’ve worn it long, super-short, and even rocked a mohawk. What hairstyle has been your favorite?
“I’ve had them all: long hair, which I would wear in a half ponytail and full ponytail—I didn’t really know what I was doing. I started growing it out when my grandmother passed away in 2005 and in the 2007 season, I donated 11-inches to Beautiful Lengths—so that’s been the most memorable one. My wife loves the mohawk. Everyone always asks me to bring it back but right now I’m trying the faded comb over—gotta keep them guessing!”
Who on the team has the best hair and who has the worst?
“I don’t want to sound full of myself but, the best, is myself. [Raul] Ibanez and [Andruw] Jones have the Mr. Clean look going on. And D-Rob [David Robertson] works hard at getting his hair perfect. The worst…I don’t want to call anyone out, but I have to say Russ [Russell] Martin because he’s always in between styles. He doesn’t know where he’s going. And with hair, you have to have a plan—you have to have goals.”
What do you love about Head & Shoulders?
“They’ve been so gracious to me. They’re like a family. And they make it fun with things like the Mane Man challenge where other athletes and I compete in competition and try to get votes. We’re letting people know that Head & Shoulders is where it’s at. I shower everyday—obviously I have to—and always use their shampoo. It’s a staple in the Swisher household.”
What other products do you love?
“I’m a big cologne guy but I mix it up. I have a heap of different ones but smelling good is a big thing. It’s important. My wife and I both wear Creed Virgin Island Water—it’s unisex—it reminds me of being at the beach.”

Victoria’s Secret Angel Candice Swanepoel spends her days modeling lingerie on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches (and yesterday, doing yoga with us on a rooftop in New York City!). But her job’s not all fun and games. Swanepoel works hard at maintaining her killer bod. The face of Victoria’s Secret new body line—Love My Body (which comes in four yummy scents and is packed with good-for-your-skin acai, aloe, oat, and vitamins C and E)—chatted beauty and fitness with us.
What’s your favorite scent in the new line?
“I love the Grapefruit and Basil—it’s the perfect combination of citrus and green notes.”
When do you typically apply body lotion?
“After my shower, most of the time. It depends on where I am because if I’m at the beach I like to keep my skin hydrated.”
What outfit do you feel sexiest in?
“I feel sexiest when I am fresh out of the shower with a spritz of perfume.”
What’s your go to workout?
“Generally I do an activity that I enjoy outdoors like playing badminton on the beach or running. But if I’m inside, I prefer boxing!”
How do you make working out fun?
“I always update my playlists and I wear something I feel sexy in—like bright fun colors.” Read more
