Head out to your local Lancôme counter, or visit lancome-usa.com, this Friday on “Genes Day”: For every bottle sold of its breakthrough Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate that day, the brand will donate $7 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and has pledged a minimum $100,000 donation. The cushiony serum claims to stimulate the activity of genes in your skin, boosting radiance and smoothing texture. If you just want to give the product a try, visit the counter Friday for a free seven-day supply. Cheers to great genes—and deeds!
Something about the chilly fall air gives us a hankering for rosy, flushed cheeks. Our favorite way to fake them (when we’re not working up a natural glow at the gym)? LORAC Blush in Desire, a true pink that looks bold in the pan, but goes on sheer thanks to a touch of glimmer. We’ve been wearing this shade for years, and have never gotten so many compliments on a cheek color. What’s your favorite way to blush?
As part of their 2010 Fresh Faces Tour, Clinique is stopping at college campuses across the country to educate women on looking and feeling beautiful in their skin. This week, they set up camp at the University of Missouri — go Tigers! — where they treated us to free makeovers, hair touch-ups and a professional photo-op. They even offered advice to women pursuing careers in fashion and beauty. One lucky woman will have the opportunity to intern at Clinique next summer!
During my visit, I picked up a few tips from Clinique makeup artist Debbie Petrak. After 20 years with the company, she knows a thing or two about on-the-go beauty!
FITNESS: Sometimes loose eyeshadow falls under my eyes when I’m doing my makeup. How do I remove it without smearing?
Debbie Petrak: I like to start with eye makeup before foundation. Then, you can fix any mistakes before applying a fresh face of makeup.
FITNESS: Even with a clean face, my blush still goes on splotchy after a workout. What gives?
DP: This is a sign that you need to exfoliate. The powder sticks to dead skin, giving it that splotchy effect. Beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin underneath.
FITNESS: How can I find a foundation that’s right for me?
DP: Choose three shades that look closest to your skin tone. Then, blend each color onto the side of your face at the same time. You should choose the one that blends invisibly into your skin. If you can see it, it’s not the right color for you!

At the launch of her first fragrance, Because of You, Grammy-nominated American Idol alum (and current Broadway star) Jordin Sparks chatted about beauty and making scents. Take a peak:
The fruity clementine and currant-laced Because of You Eau de Parfum Spray is also a bargain: Just $9.50 through the month of October and ($14.95 after) via the link above. Enjoy!
I’m obsessed with these new, credit-card-sized portable floss holders called “Flossboxes”, and I have one in my gym bag, on my desk at work, and in my purse. The coolest part? You can customize them here with your own photo. Use the FITNESS logo here for a fun gift for your most active friends. You could even order them early and store them away for the holidays to use as stocking stuffers. Happy shopping!
Lashes complete any makeup look, whether you’re going for dramatic or subtle. Try these easy (and cheap) tricks for gorgeous fringe:
- Use your blow dryer and eyelash curling together. Turn your blow dryer on to a medium setting and blast the heat onto your curler for 15 seconds. Then, use your eyelash curler as you normally would—your lashes will curl easier and look much more dramatic than with mascara alone.
- Just say no to clumps. Even the best mascaras begin to get clumpy after a few uses. Don’t give up on it just yet, though—run the closed tube under super-hot water to re-liquify the formula, then apply as usual.
- Wearing clear mascara under your usual tinted version can work as a base, adding thickness to your lashes. Having a base undercoat can also make the color appear darker, for a more dramatic effect. Be sure to let it dry thoroughly before applying the colored formula.
These tips work great alone—and are even better when combined. What’s your favorite lash trick?

An active lifestyle can take its toll on fragile strands (hello, perpetual ponytail!), which is why we love Herbal Essences Hydralicious Reconditioning Shampoo. The thick, swirly formula not only looks (and smells) amazing, but cleans sweat and grime while targeting parched, damaged areas with reparative ingredients like shea—all for under $4. What’s your go-to shampoo?
Check out this behind-the-scenes video from the “Your Prettiest Skin Ever” photo shoot for our October 2010 issue. The model was absolutely gorgeous and told us that she stays fit by surfing. Read the story at the link above and let us know which skin secret you were most surprised by. I had no idea that a high-protein diet can lead to puffiness or that my mani could be upping my skin cancer risk!

With fall well under way, haunted hayrides and homemade apple pies aren’t the only things to look forward to this season. Pumpkin-infused beauty products have made their way back into stores, and this time, they’re taking over the beauty scene. Not only do pumpkins make for delicious autumn desserts and side-dishes, but they are also ideal for skincare. Pumpkins are rich in antioxidants, and also contain enzymes with exfoliating properties. And because they are high in vitamin A, vitamin C, and zinc, pumpkin-infused beauty products are a superb choice for those with sensitive skin.
I’ve compiled a list of the Fall 2010 pumpkin-infused beauty must-haves, which are available at Sephora, except where noted:
1) Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Gentle Exfoliating Treatment
2) Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Peel
3) Philosophy Pumpkin Spice Lip Shine
4) Zia Treatments Pumpkin Exfoliating Mask (found at Zia Natural Skincare)
Too many trips to the pumpkin patches? Don’t throw out those leftover jack-o-lanterns! Try an easy at-home mask by combining 2 tbsp mashed pumpkins, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp honey, and 1/2 tsp milk, and applying to your face for 15 minutes. Will you try pumpkin-infused products this fall?
