Lashing Out

Written on July 29, 2010 at 11:38 am , by

FITNESS sat down with actress Claire Danes to find out what’s got her lashes all aflutter these days.

Some women are apprehensive about Latisse, the prescription treatment for hypotrichosis used to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker and darker? Were you nervous about starting it?

I did a lot of research online and talked to my doctor about it. After learning the truth about Latisse, I was reassured. It’s was the only FDA-approved lash grower and I loved that it went through clinical testing before being put on the market. I felt confident to go forward.

You hear about all of the crazy side effects from Latisse like iris discoloration. When you started did you have an side effects?

I got a little red around my eye about a week into it, but my doctor said it was normal and fleeting. I’ve had no side effects since.

Your lashes are gorgeous, tell us how you got to this point.

I apply it before bed like eyeliner. It took about four weeks for my lashes to start growing, and took 16 weeks to see the full effect. My lashes grew longer first, then fuller, and then darker.

What do your friends say when they see you now?

I ran into a good friend recently while jogging and she thought I was wearing false lashes — while jogging!

You obviously love Latisse, but what are some of your other beauty faves?

Tinted moisturizer and lip stains. I also like metallic gel eyeshadows.

Be a Beach Babe

Written on July 28, 2010 at 8:00 am , by

shoshanna_053JEPGShoshanna Gruss designs swimsuits. But not just any swimsuit. Her bikinis and one-pieces are created to adapt to every women’s figure and fit like a glove (read: no wave mishaps!). We sat down with the fashionista for her tips on looking cool in the heat.

What is the hottest swimsuit trend this season?

A big trend right now is a ruched one-piece. And the best part about this style is that it’s flattering on all body types. For curvier figures it offers more support and camouflages trouble spots.

What are your beach bag must-haves?

Lip balm with SPF, a juicy romance novel and Organic Avenue Juice.

What are your top secrets to feeling confident in a bikini?

-After working out so hard and getting your body into bikini shape, take the time to find a suit that will most flatter your newly toned body. Take the time to go into the stores to try on each shape and style so you can feel your best on the beach.

-Get your skin perfectly smooth and hair-free. I LOVE the tools in the new Venus Bikini Kit . It gives me everything I need for a perfect shave from bikini line to toes.

-After shaving I like to use a little self tanner all over to get that healthy summer glow, without the burn.

Cheryl Burke’s No-Sweat Secrets

Written on July 22, 2010 at 2:15 pm , by

TBS_DeoDry4 I recently got the chance to chat with Cheryl Burke from Dancing With The Stars (love that show!) at the Body Shop DeoDry Launch event in downtown New York City. My biggest question: How does she stay sweat-free during her performances? She reveals her secrets below.

“We dance like 7-8 hours every single day, 7 days a week, so it has been really hard for me to find a product that keeps me from not sweating. I just put The Body Shop DeoDry on once a day and I’m not self-conscious: I feel great and feel confident in my own skin… I’m able to wear what I want without feeling paranoid that I have sweat marks everywhere.”

The Body Shop DeoDry deodorants ($8 each) are available in three scents: Chilled & Breezy, Cool & Zesty and Fresh & Floral (Cheryl’s fave).

Raising Eyebrows with Landy Dean

Written on July 20, 2010 at 12:51 pm , by

60441077From murder mysteries to underage affairs, ABC Family is raising eyebrows with the new drama, Pretty Little Liars. For Lucy Hale, star of the hit show, hers also happen to be perfectly groomed.

“The thickness of her brows really compliments her features and the size and shape of her eyes,” celebrity makeup artist and eyebrow expert, Landy Dean said. “She has a modern, yet classic shape.”

I wanted to achieve the same look, but after years of tweezing, waxing, and over-trimming, I was afraid it was too late. I met with Landy at the Marie Robinson salon in New York City to see if he could work a miracle (or two).

“It’s going to take a lot of time and patience to grow them out fully,” he told me. “But you’ll get there.”

Landy, a favorite among beauty editors and celebrities, is best known for his natural approach to brows.

“Most of the problems I see are man-made — over-tweezing, waxing, trimming, etc,” he said. “I’ve never had anyone come in who was all-natural and I say ‘yikes.’”

Before you pick up a pair of tweezers, consider the impact it could have on your face. Landy pointed out that most of us aren’t comfortable cutting our hair at home, yet we continue to shape the most dramatic part of our appearance.

“The eyebrows have such an impact on your face. You need to ask yourself, ‘is this something I want to do at home?” Landy said. “I would at least recommend being advised by a professional.”

Considering I’m no better at cutting my hair now than I was at five (sorry, Mom!), I’m leaving my brows to the experts from now on. After 30 minutes with Landy, my friends immediately noticed the difference.

Now if only I could find a way to snag Lucy’s gorgeous English teacher — she’s too young for him anyway!

The Product That Saved My Life

Written on July 19, 2010 at 1:12 pm , by

Hey summer beauties! It’s Julie, the beauty intern here at Fitness. I recently had a self-tanning scare that I just had to share with you. Major drama!

I recently got a spray tan for my 21st birthday trip to Las Vegas. As a frequent spray-tanner, I made sure to exfoliate all the dead skin off so the tan would last longer. Apparently I missed a spot, because the next day a patch of skin on my chest was peeling! The area looked horrible and blotchy compared to the rest of my smooth, bronzed skin. How could this happen to me on my birthday? Of course I started freaking out. I was so panicked that I even contemplated going in a tanning bed to even it out (BIG NO-NO)!  I took a few deep breaths, gathered my composure and thought, “wait a minute—I’m a future beauty editor—there has to be something in my product stash that can fix this!” First, I tried blending it in with a dark concealer. No luck. Next, I tried using a powder bronzer. Didn’t work either. I then tried using a liquid bronzer. Sorry, Charlie!

Then, I got an idea. I’d been hoarding all of these at-home self-tanning products since wintertime. So I pulled the box out and  found Victoria’s Secret Beach Sexy Flawless Airbrush Instant Bronze Spray (2/$20, victoriassecret.com) and sprayed away Eureka! Even skin tone! I was amazed at how well it covered everything up  and it even dried quickly.

Have you ever experienced a beauty crisis like mine? Let us know which products saved your day in the comments below!

Fruity Fixes

Written on July 16, 2010 at 12:17 pm , by

Ever look at the ingredients of your favorite skincare product and have absolutely no clue what any of them are? Us too. Luckily, we found a ton of all-natural skin-savers just for you–and they can all be found right in your fridge! Try this frugal fruity refreshers for softer skin in an instant. If you’ve got a lemon you are good to go!

Lemons have AHA’s and BHA’s (what?!)

AHA’s are alpha dyroxy acids that prevent clogged pores, enhance cell renewal through exfoliation, hydrate the skin, increase collagen production and improve skin texture to give it that glowy look. BHA’s are beta hydroxy acids that work as an exfoliant and are known to improve wrinkles, roughness, and even out skin pigmentation. Basically, they make your skin look younger and more refreshed!

What you need:

  • Lemons
  • Sugar
  • A bowl

*Note: If you have sensitive skin test the scrub on a small area to make sure it won’t irritate the skin beforehand, and use caution around the eye area.

What are your favorite at-home skin savers? Tell us in the comments below!

Stay tuned next week for more fruity fixes!
