Go natural. Start with second-day hair, which has more hold. Or use a texturizing cream, like Aveda Light Elements Texturizing Creme ($24, aveda.com), for grip, says Kimberly Morgan of Bob Steele Salon in Atlanta.

Do the twist. Take a two-inch section from one side of your part, twirl it back and secure it with a bobby pin. Repeat on the other side, crossing the pins into an X.

Smooth it out. Apply shine serum, like L'Oreal Paris EverPure Smooth Frizz-Free Serum ($8.99, drugstores), to tame flyaways and add sheen.

Brush up. Using a flat brush, gather hair on the top of your head and secure it with an elastic. "The higher it is, the less likely it is to bounce or tug while exercising," says Marc Mena, a stylist for Warren Tricomi Salon in New York City.

Lock it down. Braid the tail. Then create a topknot by twisting the braid around the base of the pony. Fasten it into place with a few bobby pins.

Go light. Skip gel or hair spray preclass; the alcohol content in some products can sting your eyes. Afterward, let your hair down and blow-dry any sweaty strands. Scrunch a dab of leave-in conditioner, like Tigi Catwalk Sleek Mystique Fast Fixx Style Prep ($14.95, tigihaircare.com for salons), through ends to smooth flyaways.

Pony up. During the day, wear your hair in a low, sleek side ponytail. The more relaxed, the better.

Braid to last. When you're ready to go out, braid the pony and secure the end with an elastic. Then, starting at the top of the braid, use your thumbs to push your hair apart. "This gives it a softer texture," Morgan says.

Transform tresses. Wrap the braid around the base of the ponytail and pin it into a bun. Spray all over with a flexible-hold hair spray. A good one: Pantene Fine Hair Touchable Volume Hairspray ($3.99, drugstores).

Air it out. Don't lose time waiting for your hair to dry or having to blow-dry it and causing more heat damage. Shampoo the night before and let it dry overnight.

Divide and conquer. Use six to eight medium-size rollers, like Conair Instant Heat Compact Hot Rollers ($18.99, conair.com). Section your hair and wrap strands away from your face. Let rollers cool before you remove them.

Give yourself a hand. Instead of brushing your hair, finger-comb strands for a tousled style.
