Health Benefits of Fiber

First I hear that fiber fights cancer, then I read it doesn't! What's the story?
Submitted by FitnessEditor

The medical community is still firmly behind fiber, especially if you get it from fruits and vegetables. More than 200 studies have revealed a "strong association between diets high in fruits and vegetables and lower cancer risk," according to a statement signed by over 50 cancer experts (see www.aicr.org for the full text). Eating five to nine servings daily has also been linked to a lower risk for heart disease and diabetes. So don't let a few highly publicized studies deter you from boosting your fiber intake, especially since they run counter to a large body of evidence. Apples, blueberries, beans and broccoli are all good choices.
