How Can I Lose Weight With a Slow Metabolism?

I'm 56 years old. I gained 10 pounds from December last year to mid-year. I eat healthy, fruits, salads, nuts, cereals, skimmed milk, yogurt, whole wheat bread 1-2 pieces a day, chicken, red lean meat (not much), no desserts, no sugar, but I don't lose an inch. What can I do? Will walking help?

While your metabolic rate does get slower with age, the process is not completely inevitable. "You can stop the decline by up to 80 percent with strength training and aerobic activity," says Miriam Nelson, PhD, director of the Center for Physical Fitness at Tufts University in Boston and the author of Strong Women Stay Young (Bantam, 2000) and Strong Women Stay Slim (Random House, 1999). It is lean tissue mass that dictates how fast or slow your metabolism is: The more of it you have, the more calories you burn.

I guess working out -lifting weights- will increase your metabolism so you don't have to fall victim to the "you're old so you'll probably be flabby soon" mantra.

You need to build lean muscle! I recommend Denise Austin's 5 Minutes target toner DVD to start out. I have used it everyday for 5 years!
